If you are looking for a smartphone, do not waste your money on this phone. For a smart phone, this phone is anything but smart. The phone is very limited in featues compared to other phones. For example, there is no contact groups, you cannot synchronize your notes, you can only set one alarm, the phone is menu drive with no short keys for some basic functions, such as delete, etc etc. Then again, maybe I am spoiled, all these features were standard on my Ericsson and Nokia phones since 2001, including 6610, 6630, N81.

I had the S730 for a good 2 months as a replacement for my outdated NOKIA 9300i. I was excited being one of the first in South Africa to get my hands on this phone - 3G/HSDPA, WM, camera, email, wifi, the works. This made my disappointment devastating. The WM menu and functionality navigation is really bad and overly complicated - it took my company techies 3 hours to figure out how to sync with my laptop without cables. And only after a call to the HTC call centre could we get it working. And it can't even do it automatically, still has to be prompted. The phone would shut down intermittently and not respond to button pushing. Battery usage is a joke - expect a maximum of 1 and half day without excessive use - I am not one of these people constantly on my mobile. Why oh why is it only possible to set 1 (repeat one) alarm? Try finding a contact in your contacts list - compared to a Nokia this becane a drag. Try browsing on this phone - you cannot fit the whole page into the screen, even in Landscape fullscreen mode. I found the keyboard to be sluggish, lagging and not very sensitive which means a lot of repeat typing. Using the front panel buttons for anything is difficult - they are so narrow and small and pushing has to be so accurate. So this, my first venture into both HTC and Windows Mobile I'm sorry to say, has also been my last. Looks great, performs miserably. A friend of mine got the same phone - exact same experiences....!

Hi everyone! Is this phone upgradable to WinMo 6.1? I'm planning to buy it especially because we have HSDPA here in South Africa and hope it's faster than the really sluggish S710 which has a slow processor and lacks 3G.

You are right, changing the HTC Home screen definitively extends battery life, perhaps not buy a very long time but it is noticeable. Another benefit from changing the HTC default home screen is a smaller memory leak.

i got some faint faint signal with gps but its not useable
for the 3G thing it depends on your network provider.... if its US then there can be issues because US is new with 3G network.
In most cases it should auto select it but if it doesnt then choose WCDMA under settings-->phone--> band select--->network type

Mine sometimes shows "H" indicator instead of "3G". Is there a way to keep the phone from using 3G when not asked ?
About GPS, the members in XDA Developers forum said most likely there's the chip inside (packaged with the processor architecture with the ATi graphic also) but is disabled. There's also attempt to enable it with software hack.
To save battery more, better not use homescreen with HTC Home plugin.

its a good phone. I like it... if you are looking for a small phone with a keyboard this one is for you.... if you dont mind taking larger phone the touch pro will be better choice. There is only regular 3g while the newer phones these days are starting to have 3.5G
There is also no GPS even though some people say there is.

Internet Explorer - when using my IE, I am limited to approx 75 characters in the address bar (phone starts beeping and does not allow any more characters)? This limits my access to certain URL's. Is this a HTC thing or a Pocket IE issue?

I do own the Device for some a month now, and am overall satisfied with it.
I am experiencing the memory leak problem though, as my memory status is usually 6MB, i use Oxiosmemory to solve that most of time.
Also an issue that occurs is in system status it saiz I have overall 43MB physical memory in stead of 64MB, and 130 instead of 256 in on device storage. I guess this is either the OS or a bug.
The unit also can not run 3D Java Apps, which is ridiculous with it's CPU, so I guess it's HTC being lazy with driver support.
Other than the above mentioned flaws the device does everything I tell it to (what's written on the tin is what you get) and does it well.
SMS/MMS, office, surfing, videos - divX works fine, blutooth and wi-fi works like a charm, the keyboard is nifty and sound quality during conversations is satisfactory.

Has any one read about the possibility that this unit may carry an AMD Imageon processor? It has the same Qualcomm MSM 7200 CPU as the Kaiser, so shouldn't it have the Imageon as well?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_TyTN_II
Also can anyone confirm or deny the production of a ROM update by HTC, or unofficial ROM updates by individual programmers addressing memory leak issues and the lack of hardware 3D acceleration?
