i have one of these phones, and i live it to bits. the camera is great, the screen is FANTASTIC (just as good as samsungs AMOLED in terms of contrast and color re production) and the build quality is better than anything i have played with from the western markets. but having owned 4 japanese phones now, i must admit that your money is much better spent on a "normal" phone.
lets look at what you get in the standard 930sh if you "acquire" one out side japan.
first off it will cost you 500 USD for the phone (or there abouts) then an extra 40 or so to "liberate it."
if this is the way you chose to go, for your $540 you get a phone that will send SMS, make voice calls, take photos and play video. (only when encoded in the correct aspect ratio, format and bit rate (and its VERY picky about all 3) thats all. no internet at all, no video calling, no installable java/flash apps.
if you buy the chinese "sharp 1810C) then you get GPRS thrown into the mix, all be it at 100-150 bucks more. this is what i have and its (slightly) less picky with audio / video formats (but not aspect ratio or bitrate) internet is functional, but even a $100 normal phone downloads faster.
want HSDPA (that you can use outside japan)? want it in a 930SH case. how does $1000 USD sound? you can buy a factory unlocked 930sh from taiwan for a grand.
i love japanese phones. they look great have amazing screens and i have yet to have a single one stop working (i have 6, the oldest being from 2002) but unless you dont use mobile internet, i cant recommend this phone to you.
however if you dont use mobile internet and are are looking for a unique camera phone, look no further than the 1810C........ because every japanese camera phone after it has its camera locked to a soft bank simcard :P

@abs:
well, what type nokia are you comparing with?
at least nokia doesn't have product that use WQVGA. so it's totally better at the screen.

> In reply to N.N @ 2009-11-15 22:17 from m78b - click to readI too would love to own one of the many fab jap phones out there. Has anyone ever heard of Hitachi Woo H1? Look it up and be amazed as I was. The problem with them is that many of the services that make owning 1 of em unique isn't supported by carriers outside jap, features like their i-mode or i-wallet. Hopefully one of the jap cell network companies setup operations in the U.S (my location), or at least collaborate with a telecom company to make their services available as I would gladly pay even if it were much higher than other providers.
BTW if you think you have it bad with your current pick of phones in Europe then what would you say about the U.S where phones like "my touch" from t-mobile are considered great phones, leaving the few phone savy (like myself) to buy phone from the Euro or Asia (those few that would work anyway)
