Software upgrade released for the NEC 616
"NEC have released a software upgrade to resolve issues with the handsets freezing, not holding to 2G or 3G, problems with accessing and managing USIM contacts, missing SMS messages and the all important call dropout rate! Yey!! Customer service will tell you how to check what software version is on your handsets, and upgrades are free provided you take your proof of purchase into a service centre. And remeber to back-up your contacts and files or you'll loose the lot."

There is a problem with the phones firmware. Just spoke to 3 and taking it to the carphone warehouse for a firmware upgrade for free. Should sort out the dropping calls problem. The more i look into this phone the more i like it. Java download programme out in about two weeks according to the Aussies. You'll then be able to load in your Java games. Yeah!

Peter,
You are right, the phone is getting seriously slagged in here but I think you are very lucky to have not experienced problems that genuinely effect communication. Maybe you live in a good locality that is supported by the 3 network rather well?

A friend of mine just got a job working with 3 (im in perth) and he said "3" welcome feedback on the issues such as bad reception, drop outs and will do what they can to rectify the problems experienced in these areas over the coming months BUT are reliant on us, the users to let them know where the problems are.

MIGHTY,
Err it's not necessarily the case that the phone will only cut out if it is changing from 3 to roaming. I know this for a fact.

Try www.mobile9.com for free up to date ring tones and some wallpaper. Does anyone know if the firmware upgrade that is released in Australia will be done here in UK too?

I have had the phone for a few days now and have to say, that for the 1st time in my life i have had no issues with a phone.

I don't understand all the agro and bitching the phone gets, it's battery life is not great but use the bigger battery then.

I'm happy as long as it lasts a day, and if you need a phone that lasts you more than a day or two then you obviously have the wrong phone.

It's all a compromise of features, i wanted bluetooth so no other phone was really an option on 3, as i didn't want a phone that has no video calling.

As for the service, i have had voice coverage everywhere i have been so far and 3 content everywhere i have tried, so no issues with that.

3 customer support is a different matter, but have to say even that has not been that bad.

i just wanted to share these thoughts with you as people here seem to be slagging off the phone, and nobody is putting their positive comments back on.

So to conclude, i think it's a great phone and not too bulky with the extended battery, the screen is amazing, the camera is adequate quality for a phone, the keypad is beautiful, and the menu is well composed.

Lacks decent ring-tones and wallpapers. came defaulted to James bond theme when i got it, which was not nice as i didn't check it and it started ringing in the middle of a bar. :)

Gixer: On the forum for the e616 you can find out how to play bigger video files - www.aussie3g.com. There's a lot of useful information there.

After a month of usage I have taken my 616, shut it off and locked it away in a cupboard. I'm back to using my SE T610 with another network which although lacking half the features of the 616 is at least reliable. I'm not losing much money and at the end of the 6 month subscription I'm cancelling, getting the phone unlocked and selling it on (hopefully for a profit). The main reason for this is the shitty battery life, it constantly corrupts MP3 files on my Memory sticks, the s/w interface was designed by an infant and the poor quality of the 3 service here in DK. Only 1 in 5 people recieve SMS's sent from my phone to theirs (on other networks), the customer support is laughable and when you have a problem they want you to jump through rings before they do anything about fixing it. For those in Denmark you should be aware that Sonofon, Orange, TDC and a couple of other players are entering the 3G arena in the DK market very soon and I'm sure their offerings will be much more attractive - phones and service.

I bought NEC e313 and e616 at the same time, and I must say that the phone e313 is much better than e616, except from the size.

1.Longer battery life.
2. Better camera zoom.
3. Better camera resolution (640x480)
4. Better picture quality.

The phone e616 have a few better features than e313.

1. Camera light
2. USB (Can only be used as a modem)
3. Better keyboard.

Thank god that I didn't pay anything for the phones, except from the monthly fee from hi3g I have to pay in another 11 months until I can get rid of them.

the reason it cuts out between calls is because its changing between the '3' coverage areas.. didnt anyone read it.. or i suppose everyone went and bought it without know its limitations...read your fucken manuals people.. i've had this phone for about 3 weeks and have had not one problem with it at all..

Yep Jeff I noticed the same. Which kinda defeats the purpose of using your phone alarm to wake you in the morning if they recommend you charge your phone while it is off (which is usually more practical overnight)

Bought my e616v in Denmark last saturday. For me ACPU:A125.56.07 CCPU:C623.ROV.
The 5 alarms don't work if the phone is switched off which is very annoying. Anyone having the same problem?
