Probably the worst pda type phone in the world, battery life less than 6 hours, whilst charging in the car the charger delivers less current than the phone uses, (ran my car battery flat in 2 hours without the engine running. Screen alignment is rubbish, no way to allocate extra virtual memory, battery gets so hot that you can barely touch the phone. BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL XDA, AND THE XDA MINI S, THEY WERE BOTH BRILLIANT

Indeed!
The Zest is an ASUS P565 with the case and CPU of P552w

I`ve got the phone for 4 months now. I`m more than happy with the way it works. GPS works just fine with Google Maps. Acurate and fast. the only thing that i need with it it`s an QWERTY keyboard. Otherwise the phone it`s perfect. I`ve installed a new ROM on it after i tried all the SPB Shells (te phone it`s to slow it all of `em). the Rom it`s a Beta version of Windows Mobile 6.5. it looks brilliant and you will only need a SPB Shell for the keyboard. The ROM can be found with a quick search on google of "WM 6.5 - 21231" and select the first link from the forum of Xda-Developers.
You got all the explanations over there about how to install it. the kit comes with loads of pre-Installed Programs. you will only need to intall on it Opera 9.7, Google Maps and YouTube player. (i`ve installed as well Facebook and a Memory cleaner but you don`t need the memory cleaner because when you press X (OK Button) it actually ends the app. ;) wicked thing that is)
It works perfectly with Windows 7 (Sync wise). i couldn`t Sync it with the standard software. The only Bug that the ROM has got is that the display on the camera appears with stripes but the pictures are perfect ...
Believe me! you want this ROM on your XDA Zest. If you need any kind of help don`t hesitate to contact me on yolinkin@gmail.com

P.S.

I`m a sales person in an O2 Shop.

> In reply to Fiona @ 2009-06-15 10:47 from 3HLGthis is normal, the manual tells you to charge and let it run all the way down 3 times until battery life will be at the optimum, which is approximately two days. You shouldn't charge it for more than 2 and a half hours either.

There seems to be some conflicting information on this 'phone. I've had mine for a couple of weeks
(£150 eBay) and would like to clear up the following:

It is made by ASUS. It is effectively an ASUS P565 in an ASUS P552w case (and a slightly slower CPU).

Battery: Lithium-Ion, needs to be fully charged then fully discharged so the battery logic chip "learns" the capacity and therefore the OS gives true readings. The manual (on CD) says this is to be done 3 times....little over the top, every couple of months is advisable tho. Once this has been done you can recharge when you like as lithium-ion have no "memory" problems.

The 'phone is suplied completely UNLOCKED. You can use any SIM you like. The only O2 bits are: O2 on the case and O2 in the O2 menu (SPB Mobile Shell v2)

An update was released by O2 a week ago and is worth installing. It made ActiveSync work MUCH better with WindowsXP.

It is a "cheap" 'phone, hard plastic case and although the microSDHC card slot is under the battery if you add a 16GB card why would you want to remove it?

I've tried TomTom v7, Route66 v8, GarminXT and iGo v8 (my favourite) and all work perfectly. As does Memory Map v5.

If you want to funk up the front end install SPB Mobile Shell v3 and also add TouchPal v4 keyboard (SIP).

The camera is OK, although I'm sure pictures seem clearer when macro mode is enabled :-/ lol

Great little 'phone.

This is my third XDA and after 2 months I am getting rid of it. The battery power is abysmal, as soon as you connnect to wifi it drops over 10% and internet browsing is a no-go, it disappears so fast. I had 2 new batteries and returned it to manufacturer and they never admitted that low-battery life is the "norm". I'm opting for an Eten with a longlife bty to return to "normal" PDS useage!!

I've had my Zest for less than a week and love it. I wanted something that combined mobile with PDA and this is it. Can't comment on internet use as I didn't buy it for that. Interesting thing about battery life. The first two days, I was tearing my hair out because I couldn't get through a whole day. Then yesterday, it started losing charge more slowly and looks as though I will now get two days or more without recharging. Anyone experienced this?

I have now owned the Zest for 3 months and first big problem has arisen. The battery is going bad very fast.
Previously in standby mode it lost 20% of its charge in a normal 15 hour day.
Today it has lost 90% in 13 hours!!!!!

I only kept the Zest for 10 days and returned. Very cheap design. Workmanship is poor. The processor is not fast enough. The camera performance is weak. Eventhough I left the handset completely stand still and take shot with timer - so that there is no handshake, the image quality was very poor. Microsd card slot is not well built. It looks like something can go wrong any time. I can say the same for the simcard slot.

After using the phone for 2 months.
I have to say, no phone is perfect and this one has its faults and limitations.

I recieved an email with an attatchment containing zipped photos. yahoo mail on this phone could neither open or download the photos. Had to do it on a proper pc!

The screen may be full VGA (640*480). But it is too small at 2.8 inches and full vga resolution is wasted. The iphone has half the resolution and 50% bigger screen by area. Side by side, Web pages look better on the iphone! Damn!

Mobile google maps work fine on the phone and I love streetview. But the mobile version has no zoom function in streetview. Still need a PC.

I went for this phone when I had the choice between an Iphone or this XDA Zest. Previously I've had a HTC Trinity (3600) for 2 years which has been fantastic (thanks to XDA-Devleopers unending Roms!) but it's getting a bit worn down now and the Dpad was going a bit! So I went for this rather than an Iphone.

Personally I think it was a great choice - for a start O2 ships this phone on PAYG and it's unlocked (fact) I'm on 3 and it accepted the sim straight away - no probs. The Iphone has GPS but no decent navigation software (google maps being great fun but no use in a car!) - I had TomTom from my previous phone and on 640x480 it looks fantastic - much high resolution and you can read all the street names from a distance now easily!

This phone's screen beats the iphone in resolution even though the screen isn't quite as large - movies on it are no probs - and microSD slot means I can upgrade to as much memory as I like (cheap 8gig card in there right now).

Internet wise - download Skyfire for free and it's a great little browser - full screen rendering (for those crazy proxy server haters - yes it's possible that someone somewhere given enough time and determination could see what you are viewing - but if that's a concern then you shouldn't be visiting those sites!! :o )

All in all - given the huge amount of PPC apps available - it's great! Touch screen is fantastic and SPB mobile menu is very good.

Love it - recommended!
