There aren't much of configurations actually on Android, but it doesn't matter. 200-300 additional megabytes for a set of drivers and for universal drivers is not a problem.

Microsoft preview program supports about 35 phone models. Some of them like Xiaomi Mi4i and other non Lumia are not listed in there blog but are supported by the Windows Insider program. That bumps the supported devices nearly to 45.
At least Google could have included Android One devices the same way Microsoft is supporting lower end devices like Lumia 520 etc.

There's also the matter of the source code. It's not available for most drivers, so Google can't simply compile what's needed for newer kernels.
And I'm not defending Google here (personally, I think the driver mess is THE biggest weakness in the Android ecosystem), I'm just telling you why it's not possible given the status quo.

All you have to do is install the Windows Insider app from the appstore and select a ring want to enroll into. Installing is done through OTA.
And more number of phones are supported by the Windows Insider program.
And it allows you to update to a normal build when you leave the program.

Exactly like how microsoft is giving out developer previews and technical previews for the last 3/4 years i see.
Downloading right now... lets see how it turns out
