A fragmented system actually works to the users advantage in some cases, instead of making the same update available at once to hundreds of millions of users.
My iPad mini 2 is still running on iOS 8.4 because i gave up after several frustrating months of snail speed upgrade downloads and connection losses, and 'unable to update' messages.
Whereas, my samsung phones download & install updates in a matter of minutes.

Spike1, 28 May 2016Well at least i know who is on top the list: Samsung!!!In truth, Samsung is not number 1 on this list. I think I see it ranking third after Nexus and Motorola, possibly fourth if we count BLU.
Linas, 27 May 2016I do agree it is design flaw. The core of Android should be updating regardless of the device ... moreOf course this would be the ideal situation for everyone, however, some mobile phones simply do not have the adequate hardware to be running the 2 latest Android versions so it not only boils down to being a matter of "Will my phone ever get Android M?", it is more of "Can my device actually support Android M at all?"
I do agree it is design flaw. The core of Android should be updating regardless of the device and the customisation layer, whenever it is touchwiz, sense or something else should be separate. As well carriers should not b allowed to delay the process. If update is available it should go straight to production. I remember having O2 branded SGS2 in UK, and the update was release 8 month later on O2 than it was on unlocked devices. That said I believe this is not as important, because majority of the people follows 2 years upgrade cycles and in case you have flagship devices it will stay up to day for that period... after which you don't care. That is why majority of the companies do not support devices which are 3+ years old.. I believe this should be googles responsibility .. and should dtart from separating core OS, from customisation wrapper.

Blame the openness???
If Android phones were really open I could update whenever I wanted to. But since companies ship it with PROPIETARY hardware, and PROPIETARY drivers, and LOCK the phone, I have to wait for them for the updates.
So blame the closedness of Android.
Anonymous, 27 May 2016I pity those who think that their whole life would be ruined if their smartphone is compromise... moreIt's got very little to do with your password(s) and a whole lot with the RAW data it carries about all your life. Contacts, pictures, videos, documents that were synced from the corporate account, location data, etc. Alone, they can already do much damage. Combine this with Big-Data analysis and perform it on a larger scale (employees of a certain corp that disregards the work phones security) and serious damage WILL happen!
Ever wondered why Android always had such a hard time in the corporate world?
True.
Still on Lollipop ?
To get Marshmallow, need to buy a new phone.
And for Android N, have to buy a new phone again.

You just don't put every private things or passwords on your phone, you put it on your head.. Sheesh.. When mobile phone revolutionize people's connectivity everyone started putting all contact number on the phone and refuse to memorise.. Now with the smartphone revulotion people started putting all their password and securities on the phone instead of memorizing them.. Serve them well if they are compromised

On the other hand.. Apple's "timely" update SLOWS down older devices.. A shameful attempt to force people to upgrade
Apple gives most updates ever and unlike Android slowing phone for us in updates to buy new Android phone, Apple makes it even faster with new features and better GUi. Android only gives updates to it's very premium phones ignoring mostly many phones with great outstanding specs.
There's no point in pondering over software upgrades or updates when it is made mainly for the purpose of enticing people to buy higher end models as they are the ones which get regular software upgrades and updates. The lower and midrange users are not respected in any way by the Companies. I am using S Duos 2 since December 2013 and I am still yet to receive Kitkat for my phone. There should be a proper product structure and the upgrades can be made every quarter. The lower end models should get the next released update viz..Kitkat if the previous one was Jellybean and the next level should get Lollipop if they are currently using Kitkat. There's no way any firm would plan their strategies like these.
Google should release 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 dollars smartphones under android one program or as nexus devices so pure android is available in all ranges for all and Google can update it directly.
And Google must advertise these phone so more and more people can know about the benefits of these phones and attracted to buy these.

Good decision for google android users...
i always prefer those manufacturers, who always update there devices with latest android updates.
Anonymous, 26 May 2016I don't understand this obsession with updates.. People are using windows 7 while windows 8/8.... moreSure, but you conveniently left-out the fact that W7/8/8.1 are still being supported, with frequent security updates (outside of the option to upgrade, at any time, to any other OS). The problem with Android is not just upgrades or simply the version number, it's the fact that several known vulnerabilities in the core OS (which cannot be patched through any other way than a ROM patch/re-issue) are left unpatched in the wild.
The smartphone is the piece of technology that carries more data (both sheer volume and the better quality) about you, your family, your bosses, all your professional documents and activities, the people around you that you don't quite know but are there, the locations you most visit, how long you take at each location, what you were doing at those location, etc, etc. Do you really want to skimp on security here? I pity the fools that think so...
