Sure at first launch companies make sure ro impress people by how their phones are fast inorder to make people buy the new phone .. i never upgrade .. just custom roms with same version. And if i had a problem i just update some minor updates and use the phone untill it becomes outdated. I have s4 still has 4.3 and s5 still has 4.4 and galaxy alpha still has 4.4.4 all have ser roms
I have a recommendation for those who have battery drop
wipe your device before upgrading and wipe again after upgrading
The second wipe is more important
If you don't wipe, You may have some issues (it depends how you are lucky :d)
And also instead of upgrading your device, Upgrade with Odin via pc (flash your device with new firmware).
It is recommended for all android devices (specially for Samsung's Productions)
For people who are not enough experienced, I don't recommend this method
gsmarena mentioned about the resolution and its affect on battery consumption. I have the same idea whit them. I reduced the resolution and I couldn't notice any change and the result was same.
This is my screen on test:

This battery test is too add
I had upgraded my Galaxy S 7 edge to android 7 nougat and I realized a significant battery improvement.
Not only me furthermore the vast majority of my friends and anyone that I know plea that the battery endurance improved after upgrading to android 7.
Watching video is not my routine so I couldn't test video endurance.
Everyone has different consumption. My consumption includes web browsing, Playing games (such as lichess), and checking the messages on messenger apps and also I'm always online with mobile data (4G plus).
While I was using android 6 my best record (Screen on) was around of 5.5 hours in a day but on android 7 with the same consumption i reach approximately 8.5 hours a day.
(My device is Exynos)

Manufacturers should stop with that thiness madness, WE WANT BETTER BATTERY LIFE!
I'm not surprised. All the Samsung phones I've had the battery life is poor after a major android upgrade. But if I reset to factory settings, only then did I ever get the true battery and performance benefits. Worth a go maybe?

And no downloading etc in background and no WiFi connected.
Yeah they keep talking about it but when will it actually hit the US versions???
Usually the 1st week after updating to a major firmware, the battery always sucks right away. Then again Samsung's firmware always makes the battery worse lol

But is this on unused devices or not? Since battery life deteriorates with time.
I believe that companies make phone s performance less woth updates and that's why battery life gets better. Eventually phone becomes ugly and u can feel the big difference in speed between new and old phones. Surprised why screen resolution doesn't effect battery life !! S8 is coming out and now updates are making s7's dead slowly
What is video playback 15 hours?? Is it mean it can playback video for 15 hours on a single change or what??
Quite confusing, because on my Galaxy S7 edge (Exynous variant) I get a significant boost in battery life and I'm not the only one. The majority of people claims overall noticeable improvement in battery life without power saving mode in QHD resolution.
For me on marshmallow I wouldn't get pass the 3-4h screen on time, now on nougat I get 4h30-6h00 without any powersaving feature.
I'm not surprised to be honest. Samsung makes great phones but fails big in the speed and quality of the updates. I own a S4 (not my daily driver) and i remember when the Lollipop arrived i noticed a severe battery life drop. Also, some features became worst like the fabulous HDR feature from the original release. So, i'm not surprised that Samsung didn't do a good job with the latest update. Sad but true!
