Really Robert Horry? Sound like completely out of blue excuse to put 5 on a number. If all oneplus employees are basketball fans, why not just instead put numbers like one plus 23 and call it LeBron or Jordan edition? Lame

But you can buy it from OnePlus from their website, there's nothing dodgy about that. You're buying it from the manufacturer.

Guys, the pronunciation of "4" in Chinese sounds like "dead", which is why it is consider as unlucky. It's not a mentality, it is simply just sounds bad. If Chinese can avoid it using it, they would. On top of that, if you try to pronounce the brand OnePlus in Chinese, Plus would sound like Family, so when you combine all together, you would get One Family Dead.
What phone are you using?
One Family Dead.
Chinese that never heard of this brand, I can assure you, that is what they heard.
Customers walk into store.
What phone and model is this?
One Family Dead.
What did you just say? or Uhm no, I will skip this.
It doesn't just sound bad, it sounds really really bad. When you know a lot of Chinese would avoid buying this phone, why would OnePlus still take that risk?
Skipping the 4 is all they need to do, everything will be normal.
XiaoMi 4, at most, just sounds like XiaoMi dead. Sure, I will give prompt to them for having balls to named their phone that. And in this case, this is just superstition and own belief. But for OnePlus, it's more than that, as it will most likely affect their sales.
"Stupid idea, cultural belief"
Call it whatever you want. If I were them, I would rather take some trash talk like that too, than having sales go down.
AbdulLamas, 07 May 2017Oneplus is a american company, but it is founded in china? Correct? What?? Oneplus is a Chinese company.. It differentiates from other Chinese companies by launching its new products globally (primarily US, Europe, India) rather than launching first or exclusive to Chinese market only.
668$ for global version, no audio jack included. No, thanks for expensive chinese 'flagship killer'. I'd rather buy flagship instead.
If that's the case then why Xiaomi has so many variants in 4 series... Its all ridiculous mentality.
This skipping 4 is nothing. I mean, have you been to China dude? Most buildings there don't have 4th floors! Even their elevators don't have 4th floors! So I'm not surprised with this skipping 4 for just a name.
Oneplus is a american company, but it is founded in china? Correct?

There is no such thing as "unlucky number“. I lived in several different countries (including china/hk) and somehow word "culture" and "tradition" became a synonym of "superstition" in my book!
This summer ,
It's really ??
So it would arrive around world ...?
LG superfan, 06 May 2017Nokia is from finnland not chinaTo LG SUPERFAN:
I never said Nokia is from China. It is indeed from Finland but because they cater to that side of the world they follow suit with what the Asians/Chinese believe in. Don't forget they always had factories in China. Even though some of their models have 4 in it, the main focus for them was NOT to make 4 the leading number of a model. I have been reading up on this for many many many years. If you research it you will see that I'm correct. Ask the internet why Nokia never manufactured a 4xxx phone.
According to a user on Reddit, in some form of Chinese, "OnePlus 4" can be pronounced as "the whole family dies"
Not superstition when they sound the same lol... No way they would call it that when they're a Chinese company.
LG superfan, 05 May 2017Seriously all this 4 being unluck is crap its not real if it is real then every child with at ... moreWell, it simply because 4 in chinese pronouns like "death" so it is considered to be unlucky and will choose to skip it
For example, in HK or in China 4/F is commonly skipped in a building so please dont ignore the culture from the other side of the Earth
