Google Maps no longer needs GPS

Google Maps no longer needs GPS - read the full textToday Google revealed the second version of their Google Maps application that can now localize your position based on the cell tower information triangulation. The new "My Location" feature allows...

Triangulation has been used for such a long time now it seem slike google is running a little behind the bandwagon... but who cares... the geenral public will always think google is God of innovation... bring to life technologies... There's no doubt big companies like google can copy something curently in the industry that no ones about and calls it their own and market it way better than anyone can... Thats where they have leverage.

The best thing is that it is showing my location in the middle of london...though i have not travelled to London yet in my life!!! Keep it up Google....

Very funny. People like me who uses a real GPS-enabled PDA get irrated when my SatNav PDA (Eten G500 + TomTom5) is sometimes not less than 10m accurate. Now Google declared that google map doesn't need a GPS and yet the accuracy is 1000m?

This application won't work on my Sony Ericsson K850 which is the latest in Java UI phones from SE.

Anyone have the same problems, or found a solution for being able to use this application?
It started up the first time I downloaded it, but afterwards, it loads for two seconds, the application icon at the top appears, then everything just disappears and I'm left at the application menu.

Cheers

Just downloaded it on my Samsung D900. Works great but you need a huge data plan and fast connection.

The triangulation is so old that i allmost started laughing while finding out what a great use it found with google maps!!! i dont know about other countries but in romania connex network uses it since febr 2004 as busola(=compass) connex - it displays on the home screen of allmost any phone the aproximate location ... and it still uses it after merging with vodafone in apr 2006 under the name of busola(=compass) vodafone :)

It work ok on my N95, although I didnt need it cause it already have gps, but its much faster to locate myself with this. When standing outside, im about a 100 feet away from the bluedot. When inside, im about 3/4 blocks away. If this get new tech get better, ill sell my N95 to get a cheaper phone.
