Actually, L310 looks like Nokia 7390, which I own. Both of them have nice design with modest performance. I know from my expirience, that ladies are more into design.

Actually the L320 looks like an updated version of the Samsung E530 which came out at the same time if not before the PEBL.

Not all phones are targeted at us. Some people want want a cheap phone and/or a lady phone, and don't realy care that much about the specs. Thats not samsung and sony going crazy, its just a different market.
