Same issue with my Galaxy nexus. I saw another phone with same software as mine and the screen was perfect. Maybe they are producing panels with various colour depth.

Hey. Those who are not having the issues be satisfied with what you have and let us, who are having problems, get attention from samsung. xda community has got a very good amount of posts related to this issue. It not that all are getting this issue. These devices are manufactured and assembled in different countries. Therefore there may be quality issues which sammsung is not really interested in looking up. Its like buying a Full HD 64 inch Flat panel plasma TV and watching SD quality movie in that.
THUMBS DOWN SAMMY...

I am also facing this issue with black clipping. Images and videos with dark shades are not view-able. Its so bad. Don't know if its the hardware or software problem. Samsung had released update ICS 4.0.3 and thereafter a small update which is also 4.0.3 with small performance related fixes, and now going to release ICS 4.0.4. Its too bad Samsung, to ignore such major defects and put customers in a desperate situation. Lot of people are getting annoyed just because of black clipping. We expect to get good quality (atleast viewable) display when we pay such amount to get one. Now i think it was a wrong decision i took to buy Samsung Galaxy Note. very painful. I very much hope to find the fix in update 4.0.4.

This issue has been known since its release last year, Samsung hasn't even acknowledged the issue as of now. Every complaint of "black clipping" made is a new complaint, according to the Samsung service centers, and it irritates the hell out of me:/

For those who have this issue, atleast try to either upgrade or downgrade your firmwares or if possible try a custom rom. I watched Megamind in mkv format and there was no issue in ICS but saw gray blocks in older gingerbread rom.

Typical of samsung. Still ignoring this issue even with the media acknowledging it. Nokia gave compensation to the lumia 900 issue on AT&T. Apple gives you a new device if you encounter a defect within the warranty period. And samsung? Well samsung ignores faults and move on to other devices. FU samsung!

> In reply to amulbhatia @ 2012-07-14 21:00 from u1AY - click to readPlease prove your statement by showing us a photo of your screen with the gamma test PNG. Also show us the same on the particular Gingerbread ROM which you mentioned. This issue has been going on since release and there are lots of threads with thousands of posts describing this issue at XDA without any solutions so far. We didnt get our devices for "free" to just let this pass. We have this issue and have been going through it without a solution. I myself havent seen a single device which does not exhibit this issue. I sometimes do software service for phones as a hobby and a lot of people who are unaware of the technical aspects of a device come to me to get their software updated, etc and so I've come across my share of notes and every device I've seen has exhibited this issue. So kindly prove yourself by uploading a photo of your Note running the test.

I doubt if the gamma test with the png file is the right method to check. I repeat that I have installed different custom roms as well as stock roms and everytime I get different results but video quality is more than sufficient for me, no burnouts at all. BTW mine is international galaxy note GT N7000, my brother has the same and we both dont have such problems. I am pretty much sure after reading the previous comments that this problem is mainly with US version.
