Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa will still have PowerVR 5 graphics - read the full textWhile Samsung left most of us a tad let down at this year’s CES with no new device announcements, it did manage to get us excited about the future regarding its upcoming Exynos 5 Octa SoC. As the name implies, the Exynos 5 Octa will feature eight cores of processing power; four Cortex A7's,...

Thats pity
and funny too!

Because they are talking about GPU not CPU, while apple A6 maybe weaker than many other Android devices, they pack the most powerful Mobile GPUs on the market, in fact ipad 3 has the same GPU as the PS Vita which is already a impressive GPU, the iPad 4 is even more powerful which has twice the proformance. So this is why iPad always has the best proformance in gaming while not as fast in browsing to something like nexus 10.

When I heard PoverVR I was happy. But now I'm confused because this GPU is not as good as in iPad4. I expected a very powerful Mali. What's happening to the SIV? :S

Why not the use the next gen PowerVR should be 2-4 times faster then current models and also has low power consumption.

544 is like 3 years old now

But even with this upgrade,s4 will still have plenty more pixels to push than iphone 5 so it's performance remains to be seen.

They've got the crappy Taiwanese semicon manufacturer built the CPU for them, which I've always think their quality are bad.

I am looking forward for a tegra4 device this year their 72 core GPU will have ultimate graphical performance.
I think samsung can loose their benchmark crown this year to some other company , wish i get a device this year with great storage, AMOLED display & tegra4 or even faster SOC.

> In reply to X @ 2013-01-14 17:31 from Am9Y - click to readIf they're to use pentile arrangement (which they probably would ... they'd better do) Samsung screens would actually only have to draw 44% (not 66%) of the pixels that iPad4 needs to draw, effectively making it almost twice as fast as iPad4, probably the first android to be faster than an iPad...

Congratz Sammy, that's the faster chip you have created yet (if true) and as long as power consumption and thermals are in place S4 would probably be the bomb, miles ahead than the competition (a bit how S1 was for its time).

Away with this Mali nonsense, back to VR, back to (graphical) performance...

Is not the fans decision, but Samsung's alone. Probably the Mali GPU is not ready, and maybe not needed(the PowerVR 5 on SGS 4 can support OpenCL and DirectX 10) for the SGS 4(maybe it will be used for tablets only).

"HTC and it's fans like the tegra 4 better."
I doubt that all of them like the slowest architecture:) .

"If you read what NVidia say on there web site - it's the best."
Wait until they prove it!

> In reply to Spiderpig2894 @ 2013-01-14 16:23 from wu4W - click to readYes, this is surely just the ARM big.LITTLE architecture (something that I'm surprised GSMrena didn't mention) whereby the 4 A7s are used for power efficiency.

We probably won't see this in a phone for another year or so.

What happend to the mali T 658 that expected to come with exynos 5 quad ?
Iphone 5 too has triple core gpu but it's 543 mp3.wonder if there's a big diffrence between 543 n 544.
it would still be interesting to see how does it stack up against current top mobile gpu's.

Now, tell me more about how that GPU will power a 9.7 inch 1536 x 2048 resolution screen. Not to mention, a slightly weaker GPU coupled with an overly more powerful CPU, will perform better than otherwise. Gaming or not.

> In reply to Grim @ 2013-01-14 17:16 from syw8 - click to readOn paper, the SGS4 should be more powerful(it has 75% of the iPads GPU's, but only 66% of the iPads pixels) then iPad 4. But then, the difference is made by the software and the memory speed. Anyways, iPad 4 rocks! And SGS 4 I'm sure it will be very close in performance if not, who knows, better.

It's 544MP3 (triple core) for Exynos Octa and 544MP4 (quad core) for Apple stuff.

HTC and it's fans like the tegra 4 better. If you read what NiVidia say on there web site - it's the best.

> In reply to Noel Carson @ 2013-01-14 16:27 from XNtq - click to readHere are some hardware facts :

you said it yourself Exynos Octa CPU vs A6 architecture.

GSMArena isn't comparing CPU part but GPU part which is another "component" embodded in those architectures.

Take for example an Intel Core i7 CPU, now add to it a graphic card : GTX680. That's your GPU. Put a slower / cheaper card instead: GT420. Now you are getting lower performance.

Now think to Samsung Exynos Octa 5 is your Core i7 + GT650 and A6 is a Core i5 + GTX690. You should understand where you ll get the most raw graphical performance.
