Those are not piano keys. The black keys are replaced by the Nokia Phablets :-)

> In reply to praksha @ 2013-08-21 16:53 from mhN4 - click to readNo. That's simpler. Subsidizing is not allowed by Russian antitrust law.

Even still. Structure is drastically different from India. There is an entry phone market. But almost half of Russian population is a middle class and keep increasing it's very fast. So smartphone market is larger. In H1 2013 smartphones made 42% of all mobile sale in absolute figures and 79% in monetary figures. Average cheque of smartphones was $325. 2,5 times less smartphones were sold in Russia than in India in H1 2013. With 9 times less population. Structure of sales is entirely different.
http://www.rbc.ru/rbcfreenews/...142250.shtml

So see, it's much more profitable to sell middle-to-high end smartphones rather than entry level mobile phones. Moreover

Russia isn't just an important market for Nokia. It's a home market. It is closest large market - just few hundred kilometers away from Russia - 3 hours on high speed train from Saint Petersburg. For years it was the anchor market for Nokia. Dynamics they made in Russia helped them to stay afloat up to 2012, when they turned to Lumia. But then they switched away from Russian market - costs grew up, no exclusive launches etc. So there has been talks in the wild on what they think of Russian market now. This is possibly reply to it.

And there is no point of introducing entry level phone in Moscow, which is very high HDI region and larget city market in Europe on its own.

> In reply to regs @ 2013-08-20 20:47 from 3NLE - click to readI know Russia is expensive and their GDP (nominal) per capita is much bigger than India. Bigger GDP per capita means they can spend more money than others.
But it is Nokia´s own report that Russian market is one of major Nokia market for feature or entry level phones. It´s high end market is Europe and America.
In Europe it is performing pretty good but in America it doesn't. Other big markets like Russia, china, India, Africa are Nokia´s budget or mid range market.

Actually these markets are budget or mid range markets for other manufactures also. One major reason is in this market operator doesn't sell phones in subsidize rate or in Installments. Whether in US you will get $800 phone in $99 and similar in Europe. that make high end phones more affordable.

> In reply to tony.stark @ 2013-08-21 10:07 from XuXZ - click to readGDP has little to do with level of life and incomes. GDP is a sum of all produced good and services. It's a size of country's economy. It does not represent actual level of incomes and salaries, but, if taken per capita, very roughly represents life situation in a country. And that's it - India's GDP per capita is 10 times less than Russia.

India is a big mobile market for sure. But its structure is entirely different. And average cheque is much lower. Russian smartphone market structure is closer to China, than to India.
