From the gsmarena article, it is my understanding that I can't use a local sim if for example I travel from Europe to Asia, I would have to keep my European sim.
Looks like Asia Pacific sets are exempted from this in the latest news.
Krish - India, 27 Sep 2013I agree with you. We can unlock after the phone has been activated first time by the operator... moreThanks..
Samsung decisions never went wrong ..will never go wrong also :)
I'm a big fan of samsung note series, it's the time to say goodbye to samsung, no worries
There are so many ulturnatives in the market...
This is so stupid, it must be a joke. Is it? Samsung? Do you want to die even before Nokia?
Sayed Ejaz, 27 Sep 2013Gelvin.. Once they baught phone from Europe after activating sim card from that region then... moreNo public announcement has been made regarding this news but how can you be so sure about it? Unless you are some of the internal workers which I have no idea you are or not. I would even believe you but right now, I am just going to believe this as an attempt to lock unlocked phones and I will continue assuming this till Sammy made a public announcement regarding this issue for us, disappointed customers.

Sayed Ejaz, 27 Sep 2013Gelvin..
Once they baught phone from Europe after activating sim card from that region then... moreI agree with you. We can unlock after the phone has been activated first time by the operator's sim. Good move by Samsung.
Haters - Please go away and troll somewhere else.
If ever I needed a reason to ditch Samsung after 3 years of loyal service (S2 & S3) then this is it! How dare they tell me which part of the world I can & cannot use my paid for cash phone! I'm in Asia every year for my holidays so the only way I can buy a local SIM in my Samsung smartphone will be to get it region unlocked it & void my warranty???
Downright ridiculous move!!!
Anonymous, 27 Sep 2013syed ejaz- u r not samsung spokesman !!!! let samsung speak publically legally !! is this sams... moreThis reports from samsung only.
If it is so you also keep quite let samsung tell it legally then we can see oki . Without knowing dont compliant samsung.
It is almost accurate what I said ..it is just a matter of announcing public. Thats it.
I'm a S3 user. My next phone was going to be the Note 3 but this news is rubbish. I travel and use local sims. This is a deal breaker for me.
I think that most did not understand this, you can use the phone on other continents, but only with a SIM card that you activate in on one of the continents. Not a problem, on a different continent,if roaming is expensive for you,in any case it is much better use the program to talk over the internet.
i'm an Asian,
so that means if i travel to Europe, my phone will stop working and i have to buy another europe-specific phone?
Very dissapointing. I can see only bad affect for the end user. No Sammy for me anymore!
Gelvin, 27 Sep 2013And who will be a genius who don't activate his phone for checking in the region where he boug... moreGelvin..
Once they baught phone from Europe after activating sim card from that region then the phone is unlocked.
It pretty simple ..this is for grey market that imports phone and selling high prices. This will not effect customers.
Got it ?
I think it's the right time for the other manufacturers , HTC, SONY, LG.. etc. to capitalise over this conduct.
Well this is a pi$$-poor move.
However I checked the retail box at a local store (I'm in Hong Kong btw) and there was no such sticker.
In any case I will be checking a few more stores before I am entirely sure.
