SONY DID PROMISE A KITKAT FIRMWARE FOR XPERIA SP. Follow the link to a snapshot of Xperia SP support page back in january 2014

Though ... moreSome people have their reasons and it is up to them.
Keeps you device up-to-date; better optimisation (requires less RAM than JB, meaning more for apps); new runtime env - ART - for future apps, instead of Dalvik, and others you can see for your sef here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history. Most of those mean nothing to an ordinary user, but enable other things. Also, sooner rather than later, apps will require 4.4+ android just to run at all, since "L" is right around the corner. Updates enable your device to stay relevant longer and largely aid in community developments. Not to mention some owners still have serious problems with final .205 and .207 firmwares.
I will not support a cheating company that lies its customers and defrauds them for their money. Nobody forced Sony to state publically they would release a KK update for Xperia SP, but they did it anywhay. They surely profited from that (mis)information and what they did is borderline illegal (fraudulent marketing and false claims). Two previous sentences are the core of the problem.
at least 4.3 for xperia L please :(
Kroom, 11 Sep 2014The discussion here is about Android version update and my post was based on that.
Security u... moreWell if you haven't updated your system recently then, you either:
- Have a **really** recent phone (built after this June) that came fixed from factory
- Have updated your system since June but don't remember it
- OR you are vulnerable (at bare least) to the much talked about CVE-2014-0224.
No way around it.
There are MANY security updates which are present in Core Android (or even Kernel). They are not updatable via app updates, you'll need a ROM update (even if just a delta update).
Bottom line is old unpatched Androids miss CRITICAL security updates.
I don't have any wish to put my life in insecure systems (and neither should anyone), they are a ticking time-bomb -- a can of worms ready to be opened.
All else are just smokescreens make to overlook the big picture: SECURITY (or lack of).

It was stated as "Under consideration" just like Xperia V,T and some others. Now, they decided against it and that's it. And since Sony doesn't allow use of ART I don't see any advantages to upgrading to 4.4 except blocking most SD card uses and worse video playback quality.

Though I really find it quite a move to determine your purchase on the fact that it will get the Kitkat update. Is it really that much of an advantage of 4.3? The SP is a fast phone nonetheless, with the current 4.3. Tell me, what's so special about 4.4?

That is called a lie and a cheat. I have friends who bought SP partially b/c of a KK promise instead some other phone.
These smartwatches are asking for 4.3 and above.
I seriously don't understand all the commotion here. You have to understand that the Xperia's M, L and SP are midrange devices. I agree that SP should've gotton the 4.4 update, as Sony said it was going to get it in the Future. Sony's been fooling Xperia SP owners (like me) which justifies the outrage, but then again, the device is considered a midranger! You can get it now for approx. 170 euro's, don't expect a fully updated Android OS on it!
If you want the latest updates, buy the high-end Z series, the Xperia Z is being support for 20 months now!
Sony isn't worse in software support than any other manufacturer. The Samsung Galaxy S3 for example, which was released at the same time as the SP and considered a true competitor, didn't get the Kitkat update as well.
Next time do buy a sony again, but take a last year's flagship rather than an equally priced new midranger which YOU KNOW won't be supported that long.

Security updates are often taken care of app by app (if they are to blame). Firmware updates which don't actually upgrade Android version, but fix other (software, security) issues are not unheard of. Mu current phone has not received that kind of updates, but my previous phones have.

Exploits won't get fixed by themselves you know! (And 4.4 was a fix for quite some CVEs).
Stable m build of cyanogenmod available for Xperia.m.niki..
Root your phone guys..

That makes your phone laggy..
Android 4.3 works perfectly well on Sony devices so at least SP can't be considered "unusable because of no update". I even dare to up the ante and say that it worked better than 4.4.2 on my ZR. 4.4.4, however, seems to be back on track and first impressions are excellent.
My personal opinion, then, is that SP users should not be upset, 4.3 works well and it is your personal option, if you stay on Sony's boat once the life of your SP is over. M and L are low end devices and you couldn't expect much in the first place.
And for everyone who talks about KitKat memory requirements: those numbers told by Google are for pure android, but the fact is, that each manufacturer adds more or less stuff to the original android and that makes the requirements higher.
I think we should post comments on the new sony mid rangers and alert them of what crap Sony has done.
I so want to screw sony so badly
I was a big fan of sony..but now I hate sony...I'll never buy sony and never promating any one to buy sony...Nokia gives updates to 2 years old phones...and sony is joking us...hate sony again and again
Its over now, going to sell my SP and waiting HTC Desire 820 to launch.................
Sony has updated its support pages mentioning that Xperia SP wont be getting its android 4.4 update.. People like us buy phones from branded companies like sony so that we can be assured of both hardware and software support atleast for the prescribed 18 month period. It looks to me its rather a marketing strategy to promote their latest so called dumb mid-rangers (Xperia M2, C3, T3, E1 and so on) by stoping the software updates to SP. When you get a closer look at 2014 mid-range devices from Sony, they dont even come close in terms of specification and benchmark scores. For example, the Xperia M2, C3, T3 has qualcomm 400 chipset with Adreno 305 GPU and 1 gb of ram whereas SP has dual core krait (better than qualcomm 400) clocked at 1.7 ghz with an Adreno 320 GPU (far better than Adreno 305). Far worse situation is that the E1 was upgraded to android 4.4 recently which has a qualcomm 200 chipset with Adreno 302 GPU and 512 Mb ram. They also patiently waited for the software support period for Xperia SP to end (October 2014) so that they can blame on the 18 month update contract that was made by google. So it is evident that the once called make.believe company is only cheating customers like us by using thier dumb strategy. What they do not know is that people are more tech savvy and they will pretty much show their strategy by not buying their cheap cheating products in the market. Remember Sony, Nokia was once a Mighty Gaint but now???? It wont be long for you to face a similiar situtaion.. Till now, I promoted your products to those who wanted to buy a smartphone but not anymore.
Byeee Sony... Make. Believe and Cheat!!!
I have been a loyal sony fan ever since I got the Sony Ericsson W800 cellphone...
even my appliances are mostly sony, if there's a sony, I will definitely choose sony..
I would like sony to know that I am very very disappointed...
oh well, it's about time to grab some apples!
maybe... maybe not...
