Time for my almost yearly post on this phone. It's still going strong. I can't figure out something to replace it with, but I know I need to soon. The reason I've gone this long with this phone is because I've had my PPC-6700 w/ Sprint for all my PDA needs. I'm still with Tmobile and don't plan to leave anytime soon.
I'm thinking iPhone and unlocking it. I'd like to do a N92 but its still coming in at $500+ and that's just on ebay.
any suggestions from previous owners of this phone? What did yo go onto? I really want something similar to this phone in feel. It's easy to text on.

It's a phone OK it does what a phone is supposed to do and does that very well. It's rugged, long battery life, and most important has the best audio quality of any Nokia. The speaker is loud and clear and the mic. has good noise rejection; perhaps due to it's heft and shape which feel like a real phone handset. Sure all of the complaints given in other reviews are valid. I'm an engineer and I like gadgets, but any gadget that tries to do many things, does nothing well. I have cameras for pictures, computers for e-mail, and an Ipod for music...
I do have two complaints however, the memory is too small to store much in the way of graphics, etc. so I use simple or default displays to save space. It also will not survive a full cycle in the washing machine, but that's no problem cause you can pick up a new unlocked one for $100-$125 on E-bay. I've had over a dozen phones since my first Motorola brick, and this model brought me back to Nokia after a stint with Samsung, it's my favorite. In fact I just lost (or stolen) one, and was checking the reviews for something new and different, and just decided to get another 6170 even though I also have a 6125 and a 1200something. For now I'll just stick with what works.

this is the best phone i've ever had - no question. mine is now 4 years old and although i have looked at newer higher spec models, they just don't impress me enough to give up my little nokia. Not 1 single problem with any feature - don't know what some of these people have been doing.

I've had this phone since it was released and it's been great. Quite early on I managed to break the outer display while the phone was in my pocket, but I bought a new display part online and replaced it myself. Surprisingly easy to do and much cheaper than getting it repaired professionally. Never used the internet functionality so I can't comment on that.
Positives: Battery life is fine. Phonebook and message storage memory is plenty (for me). Screens are nice and bright and display all the information I need. Keypad is a pleasure to use, and the menus are quick and easy to navigate (as with most Nokias). Sound quality is fine. The stainless steel body looks great and the flip mechanism is solid.
Negatives: easy to scratch if you're not careful 100% of the time. Speakerphone is a bit quiet. Difficult to keep clean. Tiny built-in memory and no memory card slot. Camera lens gets full of dust. Camera is only VGA. No bluetooth.
In summary, if your requirements are fairly basic (ie no MP3 player, no bluetooth, lame camera, small memory) but you want a nice-looking phone, this one is worth looking out for.

I've had this phone since it was released and it's still going! Yeah it sucks for the memory side of it.. I've had like 3 crashes in it's lifetime. But it's not slow if you don't keep turning it off and on, it just takes forever to connect to the network on startup.
Also, the browser is crap, most sites don't display properly even if they have been built for wap. Most inline images never display, and you can rarely download an image directly, because of some mime type issues i guess..
But if you want a phone to be a phone, its perfect.. works for me no problem, great signal, rarely bugs out.
If you want a personal media centre of some kind, get a smart phone!

Such a good phone. User friendly for all functions. It also made life easier. The bad things is there's a dust in the cam lens area..and the clamshell external cover easy to get schratch. Memory too small. 2.2MB? you have to delete all memorable things recorded early for a new one. Battery lifetime is excellent.
