The best 'phone there just about.
Really excellent excellent telephone.
Nokia - check. Steely finish - check. Flip (active) cell - check. Big buttons - check. Big easy-read screen - check, & standard 'Low' ringing tone - check.
This portable phone is the best. Brilliant, had it 3 or 4 years. Cannot recommend it enough. Sturdy and inexpensive. Natural to use.
If you want a camera, buy one. If you want a radio, go & buy one, if you want a music player...
Nokia 6170 - brilliant unit. After a loooong time the speaker can go (where the person can hear you but you can't hear them), but they are a pound or 2 on eBay.
Dial *#06# for the IMEI number, & *#0000# for the software version, as it is with any Nokia. Imagine this company started out making rubber wellington boots and car tyres, & now produce the best battery phones.

At first I did not appreciate this phone a lot,but it is very easy to use and very durable.I just hate the fact replacing the case is too expensive!crap!but still, love it!

I have it for 3 years now and I must say it's a GOOD phone even though I was angry with its lack of memory at first and I NOW have problems with the fact that sometimes I can't hear anything- but that's all, no other problems what so ever.

After a year of using that phone here are my opinions:
- love the design, phone is beautifull
- just broke, I hear no voice, except when on speakerphone,
- "steel" design is only cheap paint that wears off easily
- 2MB is useless
- scraches easily
- basically I would have never buy it if I knew

It's a beautiful phone but bad things happen to it ... I have one so here are the problems :
1. The case is made o plastic, covered with some kind of steel . The plastic part breaks very easy is u drop it on something solid .
2. The designers were drunk when they made it . So, you have mp3 and aac player on 2.2 MB of memory with no card .
3. Your buttons will remain printed on the screen after a while .
4. The outer control buttons get messed up pretty quick . Volume doesn't work anymore for me .
5. For some reason de gray shiny part around the main screen gets ripped and looks bad .
If you just want to talk and look cool, buy it, if you have bigger plans leave this one .

Yes I don't know why NOKIA didn't keep the design and just update camera etc,
still much better looking than most phones. Well VW did it with the Beetle. Also reliable and cute

Still one of the best looking phones, better many current offerings.
Nokia update with slimmer titanium instead of plastic parts updated camera software etc.

I love this phone, but it's definitely time to replace it now. I've been an active contributer to this thread for years.

One of the big things is that I want to keep some of the ring tones for use w/ the N76 that I plan to get to replace this phone.

Does anyone know how to get ringtones off this phone? like "Nocturnal" for example? It has a copy right protection.

simple and sophisticated phone. iv been using this phone for a couple of years, i was very amazed coz i dropped this phone LOTS of times, it still works. though it doesn't have great features compare to any other phones, i still want to keep it coz its user friendly. i use it only to make phone calls and send messages.

Time for my almost yearly post on this phone. It's still going strong. I can't figure out something to replace it with, but I know I need to soon. The reason I've gone this long with this phone is because I've had my PPC-6700 w/ Sprint for all my PDA needs. I'm still with Tmobile and don't plan to leave anytime soon.

I'm thinking iPhone and unlocking it. I'd like to do a N92 but its still coming in at $500+ and that's just on ebay.

any suggestions from previous owners of this phone? What did yo go onto? I really want something similar to this phone in feel. It's easy to text on.

It's a phone OK it does what a phone is supposed to do and does that very well. It's rugged, long battery life, and most important has the best audio quality of any Nokia. The speaker is loud and clear and the mic. has good noise rejection; perhaps due to it's heft and shape which feel like a real phone handset. Sure all of the complaints given in other reviews are valid. I'm an engineer and I like gadgets, but any gadget that tries to do many things, does nothing well. I have cameras for pictures, computers for e-mail, and an Ipod for music...
I do have two complaints however, the memory is too small to store much in the way of graphics, etc. so I use simple or default displays to save space. It also will not survive a full cycle in the washing machine, but that's no problem cause you can pick up a new unlocked one for $100-$125 on E-bay. I've had over a dozen phones since my first Motorola brick, and this model brought me back to Nokia after a stint with Samsung, it's my favorite. In fact I just lost (or stolen) one, and was checking the reviews for something new and different, and just decided to get another 6170 even though I also have a 6125 and a 1200something. For now I'll just stick with what works.

this is the best phone i've ever had - no question. mine is now 4 years old and although i have looked at newer higher spec models, they just don't impress me enough to give up my little nokia. Not 1 single problem with any feature - don't know what some of these people have been doing.
