wifi is completely alien to me. I huv no idea wat is wifi n how does it work?plz help... moreWi-Fi, which stands for "wireless fidelity", is a wireless networking technology used across the world. Wi-Fi refers to any system that uses the 802.11 standard, which was developed by the "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers" (IEEE) and released in 1997. The term Wi-Fi was pushed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a trade group that pioneered commercialization of the technology.
In a Wi-Fi network, computers with wifi network cards or phones like nokia E51 connect wirelessly to a wireless router. The router is connected to the Internet by means of a modem, typically a cable or DSL modem. Any user within 200 feet or so (about 61 meters) of the access point can then connect to the Internet, though for good transfer rates, distances of 100 feet (30.5 meters) or less are more common. there are retailers who also sell wireless signal boosters that extend the range of a wireless network.
Wifi networks can either be "open", such that anyone can use them, or "closed", in which case a password is needed. An area blanketed in wireless access is often called a wireless "hot spot". There are efforts underway to turn entire cities, such as San Francisco into big wireless hot spots. Many of these plans will offer free, ad-supported service or ad-free service for a small fee.
So if you have a phone which has wi-fi like the E-series or nokia N95, N82, N81 etc you can surf the internet, check you email or use your favorite chat application installed in your phone such as messenger or skype free of charge or for a very small fee without making any effect to your phone bill if you're the type of person who use the internet frequently.
i paid a sum for my E51 between 125 - 127 pounds.
HANO, 12 Jul 2008I jus wanna know if its able to run .SIS files?yes it can. both .SIS and .SISX mate...

Winura, 12 Jul 2008yes the phone has 2 way video calling. the 2mpxl camera is used for that in lower resolution.Does this mean that I couldn't see the person I'm calling if i rotate the phone to use the camera??? cause the phone has just one camera!
Einstein, 12 Jul 2008Can you please tell me if E51 can make video call? it doesn't have a camera in front I couldn'... moreyes the phone has 2 way video calling. the 2mpxl camera is used for that in lower resolution.
Original_Jamaican, 12 Jul 2008Winura, quick question:
Your phone originally came with firmware 100.xx.xx. Since you have ... moredefinitely Skype mate. here's the link.
I think the E51 is still not in the list. if its not there select the Nokia N95. I selected the N95 because the E51 was not in the list. why go for something cheap while you can get the best. (LOL)
And yes. since i upgraded the firmware the quality (not the loudness) of the sounds has improved. plus i find the battery to last longer than usual.
I got the crank ring tone from a friend of mine. so if you can give me your mail address i'll mail it to you.
oh by the way i managed to install nokia chat successfully. what you have to do switch off the phone and switch it back on, without going to contacts,(i noticed when i went to contacts the package couldn't be un-installed), and don't run the application you installed with that package as well, just go to application manager as soon as your device is on and remove the package. it works. (smile) and now i'm using nokia chat application. but i don't have any contacts yet. (LOL) most my friends use S40 and the application don't support S40.
try its out. here's the link to download.
and here is the link to download mail for exchange, the push email client.
its just like having blackberry on your phone. why spend more when you can settle foe less... (smile)
Can you please tell me if E51 can make video call? it doesn't have a camera in front I couldn't seen any camera unless the 2mp in the back.
Winura, 12 Jul 2008first of all congrats for buying the E51! (smile)
Well i'm using the ring tone which is use... moreWinura, quick question:
Your phone originally came with firmware 100.xx.xx. Since you have now upgrade to 200.xx.xx do you now find the volume to be louder with the '200' or the volume is still the same as when you had the '100' ?
Winura, 12 Jul 2008first of all congrats for buying the E51! (smile)
Well i'm using the ring tone which is use... moreI guess the numbers in the brackets is a form of identification for each E51.
Can you send me the ringtone based on Crank...great movie by the way, just sad that he had to die in the end.
Can you send me that ringtone or send me a link to find it ?
Pending on your answer I will send you my e-mail address or visit the link.
Previously it was said that Skype wasn't supported for E51 so the fact that you have it now means that it's supported...if you didn't make a mistake about having Skype. Now it gets confusing, if Skype is now supported it makes me wonder which app. I should go with, the worldwide famous Skype, Fring or Gizmo.
The E51 presents too many choices which may drive us nuts...in a good way of course (smile).
Good to have you around Winura, make sure you stay put (smile).
Original_Jamaican, 12 Jul 2008WINURA and the gang...I have finally purchased the E51 and ready to give it a full test drive.... morefirst of all congrats for buying the E51! (smile)
Well i'm using the ring tone which is used by 'JASON STATHAM' in the movie crank. well some say its boring but i love it. its in .mp3 format since its a small clip and i have activated 3D as well with the audio level 7. In the 3D tones menu i have set the SOUND TRAJECTORY to CIRCULAR and TRAJECTORY SPEED to 70 and finally REVERBERATION in to RAILWAY STATION. those are the precise settings i'm using. and no vibrator.
I'm using windows live and skype on mine so i haven't tried other applications. I had ebuddy as well but it didn't go well with my phone's firmware so i just deleted it.
my current firmware is,
Nokia E51 (09)
and when i bought my phone originally it had a firmware which started with 100 something. not starting with 100. cant remember the exact version. i don't have any idea of the firmware version which i used to have earlier. sorry about that. and i have no idea about the digits inside the brackets.
My E51 Firmware is:
Nokia E51 (12.1)
I noticed Patrick who posted on July 7th has a similar firmware:
Nokia E51 (14.1)
But his firmware shows Nokia E51 (14.1) while mine says Nokia E51 (12.1). Anybody knows why the difference and what it means ? What's the difference between 12.1 and 14.1 ?
Winura what does your firmware says ?
WINURA and the gang...I have finally purchased the E51 and ready to give it a full test drive. I got it yesterday Friday 11, 2008 as I said I would...TGIF (smile).
It's an authentic Finnish made E51. I examined the box, contents and labelling carefully and I can see it's authentic. I notice that my provider normally gets their Nokia Symbian phones fron Finland so I'm not surprised. I have the black version with straight lines on the back cover plate.
Winura when you tell me that you have never missed a call with the phone set at level 7, which ringtone have you been using all along, a built-in one or 3rd party mp3 / aac ? Tell me the name of your ringtone and tell me all the settings you adjusted pertaining to ringing. I notice that the phone comes with the volume level set to 7 out of the box.
Also, do you use Fring or Gizmo ? I went to Fring's website and it looks cool. It shows me where you can use Yahoo / MSN / VOIP from within the same Fring application.
So far I don't see where the ringing is that mighty as you have emphasized. Guess I need to do some more testing.
For the moment I'm using it in offline mode as my SIM card is still in my 6300 due to the fact that I'm test driving it and furthermore I will have to do a complete back-up of my contacts etc. from 6300 to my PC then transfer them to my new E51.
The 3D feature looks cool. Tell me exactly how you set yours, the Trajectory setting and the others within the 3D menu.
So far I'm impressed with the WLAN scanning. It finds Wi-Fi connections very quickly even though most of them are too weak for me to use seriously. The answer is to get a WLAN router for my PC at home. My home PC ADSL speed is 8Mbps (1MB per sec. when dowloading) so I would be able to surf/download stuff quickly if I use my PC to feed my E51.
The buttons which the major reviewers and many users complain about being extremely hard to press doesn't seem that way to me. I'm able to get the buttons to respond without using my finger nail as many users said they have to use.
All in all impressed so far. Will let you know my findings as they come along.

Original_Jamaican, 11 Jul 2008To WINURA:
Back to the matter at hand, the E51.
The very first thing I intend to do is i... moreThe Nokia E51 uses the Symbian S60 R3 operating system. While the R2 version is seriously plagued by viruses, the R3 version is much more secure than it. And also incompatible with it. (That is, programs - including viruses - for R2 don't run - or even install - on R3.)
There are no viruses for Symbian S60 R3 phones - and even if somebody writes one, it won't be able to spread successfully. (Thats what i've heard)
There are anti-virus programs for S60 R3 phones like ours, but unfortunately i haven't seen any free ones. And, because of the lack of viruses for this environment, paying for one, i think is a waste of money.
but in mine i used F-secure anti virus which i downloaded via the "Download!" application in my phone for free. but its now expired.
other than that i tried Kaspersky. and i didn't find anything special comparing it with F-secure. didn't feel being slowed down or anything. they just auto starts when you switch on the phone and scans for viruses which don't even exist. maybe in future these software could become useful but until now i think its pointless. but then again if you really want one get the F-secure.
the strange lightness is something even i felt when i bought the E51. could be because in the 6300 its says "finished in steel" and in this it says "finished in STAINLESS steel". (LOL)
