Debaashis, 27 Jun 2009Thanks so much, Original Jamaican, for your perceptive reply. But if you were to give on a pla... moreTo DEBAASHIS:
One of the biggest concern among GSMArena opinionists is the maximum capacity Micro-SD card the E51 supports. Some people complain that it won't work with 8GB or if it does work it slows down the phone a lot.
A legendary phone, the Nokia 6230 was stated as supporting a maximum of 128MB MMC memory. What Nokia should have said was that anything over 128MB wouldn't be guaranteed to work properly with the original firmware. I used a 1GB with my 6230 with no problems once I updated the firmware to a later version. It turns out the maximum support for the 6230 was 2GB. I didn't need so much though at the time.
The same goes for E51. If you have a later firmware, higher capacity memory cards should work flawlessly with no slow downs whatsoever once you have a good brand Micro-SD card.
Let me tell you this DEBAASHIS, I have a Transcend 8GB Class 6 using in my E51 right now and I have NO PROBLEMS whatsoever and the phone is as fast as lightening just the same. If you are wondering about the Class 6 part, it's merely the measurement of read/write speed. Normally the options are Class 4 and Class 6. Class 6 is a bit harder to get. Class 4 means at least 4MB per min. and Class 6 = 6MB per min.
Personally, I would go for the Transcend because my E51 starts up fast and seems to run faster overall with the Transcend 8GB Class 6 compared to my previous A-Data 4GB Class 6.
As far as I'm concerned the E51 will support 16GB even though I haven't tried it yet. Reason being recently I went to Nokia Europe E51's homepage and under accessories, Nokia showed a 16GB memory card...something they didn't list under the E51 accessories previously (I just checked again and now I see 16GB and 8GB side to side). So if the price is right, max out things and go for a 16GB. If that is far too much memory for you then go for a 4GB or 8GB.
If you are going to go for a 8GB or 16GB I would suggest you upgrade your E51's operating system to firmware revision 300.34.56 (to check your version press *#0000# in stand-by mode). You can upgrade your firmware using Nokia PC Suite. The reason I suggested upgrading to the lastest is because the first version of the firmware was said to be created before 8GB and 16GB were put on the market so upgrading to the latest will support these high capacity cards better. They may not work OR may not work properly if you have the initial release version of the firmware which was 100.34.20. The second firmware release was 200.34.36, third was 220.34.37 and the latest, released January 2009, is 300.34.56.
The way I see it though, if you buy a E51 now more than likely you will get the latest firmware available for your region. While we are on the topic of region, where in the world are you ?
Click on the link below to see for yourself that Nokia officially supports these high capacity memory cards. Don't believe rumours.
Let me know your thoughts are after reading my post.

But if you were to give on a platter both E51 and E52, which one would you choose today? Since the memory card, you say, plays a big role rather than the internal memory, wouldn't E52 be better since it supports up to 16 GB-memory card, compared to E51's 4-GB, as recommended by Nokia on all its websites. My question is: is it possible to a 16-GB memory card on E51 without slowing it down or causing it to hang. Thanks once again for the reply.

The E51 is a good buy whether 2007 or 2009.
Personally I don't have a problem surfing the net or reading my e-mails on the E51's screen. It's big enough for both tasks.
However, the phone memory DOES NOT play a crucial role where e-mails is concerned because you can save ALL your e-mails on your memory card.
Virtually everything can be saved to the memory card which means you can bypass the internal memory for the most part.
Things which can automatically be saved to the memory card:
1. Text Messages, E-Mails and anything else to do
4. Voice memo or recording of phone calls.
5. Games or any applications.
If there are more I can't think of them right now.
So DEBAASHIS, the fact that e-mails can be saved to memory card means you can now easily choose between the E51 or E52.
Personally I love the E51 and I'm sad the CONTACTS KEY wasn't included with the E52.
The choice is yours BUT as I pointed out, memory doesn't need to play a part in you deciding which phone to get.
Can anyone tell me if buying E51 makes any sense in June 2009, especially when compared to just-announced E52? E52 may have bigger screen but much less memory. Which is more important when it comes to email and net surfing--bigger screen or more memory?
Thanks for your answer
