Anonymous, 23 Sep 2010unfortunetly they did... :( can't understand why, auto-f isn't so exclusive/expensive... Probably due to size. Autofocus may have resulted in a thicker device. The N8 has autofocus and the camera unit protrudes out the back of the device. The E7 already has less thickness to work with due to the sliding mechanism.
I personally wouldn't mind a thicker unit for autofocus. Maybe others do not like a thicker device or one where the camera protrudes.
E90 run...the best communicator

I just read the article on Allaboutsymbian regarding EDoF. It seems that in addition to keeping foreground and background images in focus, the EDoF design also keeps the thickness of the phone reasonable.
Anonymous, 23 Sep 2010there are a lots of buzz on fixed focus... GSM arena pls updat--it's not auto focus but extend... morePls read again the article. EDoF is abbrv. of Extended Deep of Field (not focus). DoF is a portion of scene that appears acceptably sharp in the image. Although a lens can precisely focus at only one distance, the decrease in sharpness is gradual of each side of the focus distance, so that within the DoF, the unsharpness is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions.
In some cases, it maybe desirable to have the entire image sharp, and a large DoF is appropriate. And this is what Nokia tried to improve with extended DoF level, so that from a half of minimum distance to infinity the camera is capable to capturing images which is the sharpness is still acceptable for most.

kamran, 23 Sep 2010nokia dod there best to produce this icon but there two things u must be improved 1. processo... moreSymbian^3 operated phones such nokia e7 and n8 don't need to have a high processor. Symbian OS ever since uses ARM processor that is known to be power efficient. Slow? I don't think so? Symbian^3 uses the latest GPU that adds acceleration, thus it gives a very smooth user interface . This means that nokia is very clever in choosing their hardwares.

fixed focus 8mp?????
areyou kidding ???
or you get wrong information gsm arena?
c'mon i dont think they give 8mp only for fixed focus
Looks like a great phone. I am now using a HTC Desire and the hype over the 1 Ghz is a sham. 19 apps open and browse...this phone needs more energy than an electric car! I have had two E series Nokia's (as well as a N97 which I ditched after 3 weeks, that one was not up to parr)and was pleased, thought the Desire was a step up...nada..I'm going back!
