Bought my Treo 600 a month back, and has been working from the box since. I was inclined to the higher resolution display of the Treo 650, but after checking with PalmOne support, learnt that the last firmware update was dated July 2005 - meaning all the bugs are not out yet. The update addresses the memory problem, but the jury is still out on the phone reception problems. Although the 160x160 is poor compared to the higher res of the 650, my Treo 600 plays Divx movies nicely. My 256MB SD card is sufficient storage for two movies. The Qset software also improves the camera resolution - both 600 and 650 share the same camera hardware - by changing the default jpeg compression. The MovieRec software turns the 600 into a movie camera with sound. Most important of all, the phone works.

I find the phone part of the 600 to be poor to fair. Reception inside of any building structure is terrible. My kids get better reception with their inexpensive LG model phones. The phone freezes up for no apparent reason (which there is a warning in the manual about this). The camera is of poor resolution. The PDA functions are excellent, but again, the screen tends to freeze up and you have to "reset" the unit and start over. I give this phone, on a scale from 1 to 10, around a 5 (mainly because of the PDA), the phone I would rate 3. A good idea, but it needs some fine tuning to deliver as much as it promises.

This phone is clearly for nerds. That being said, this phone is an excellent product. In my opinion it and the 650 are the closest anyone has come to getting PDA phones right. I have had this going on a year now and its reliable and does what it promises.

Hi treo maniacs,

I am in Vietnam. I have been thinking about buying a Treo smartphone since last December. My need is to have a phone that allows me to check my emails too in a proper manner. Did not buy a 600 knowing that the 650 was to be released early 2005.

Now my Sony Ericson T630 is dead and I need to buy it. Both models are now on offer here. The 600 @ $400, which seems a good deal and 650 @ $770, which is ... hard spending to digest... Still I can't decide. Buying the old one or the latest one...

After brownsing the net, it seems that the 600 has proved to be a bestseller whilst the 650 is said to have a few shortcomings for the extra $.

Appreciate your opinions.

Thanks
Sam

I tried one because of the closeout price (US$300) at T-Mobile with extra memory chip and MP3 software. I had mixed feelings but the killer was that when switched to speakerphone, the mic gain dropped noticeably, making it almost useless as a speakerphone. Motorola speakerphones do this properly, increasing mic gain.

The worst phone ever!! There is loud humming sound, the keys are clumsy and the phone keep going on wireless mode from the slightest touch of the phone.

I've used this phone without a problem for 18 months. A few weeks ago I changed to a 910i and changed back a eight days later. The Sony has terrible battery life, cannot be used properly with one hand and the Outlook software does not transfer without multiple duplication.

The Treo is a little ugly, a tad bulky and equipped with a lousy camera, but it is a reliable phone, contacts book and diary. I can also send and read emails and (just about) surf the web. Shame that Orange's coverage is nothing like what they boast. All said, I would recommend the Treo 600 to anyone, and I look forward to trying the 650.
