Sony Ericsson P1 review: A smart sharp-shooter
The Sony Ericsson P1 is an exciting new smartphone that is to be included in Sony Ericsson portfolio. Powered by Symbian OS and featuring a QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen TFT display with QVGA resolution and a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus, it represents the next level of the development of UIQ smartphones. As such, it seems that the Sony Ericsson P1 will be the flagship of Sony Ericsson smartphone line overrunning even the Sony Ericsson P990 and we were more than curious to find out how it performed in real life.

> In reply to Sir Ahsan @ 2008-10-09 21:09 from 2Adg - click to readI have to agree with you there. I have the P910i and this was the first time using this keyboard after buying the phone last month.I struggled initially but after about two weeks it became a very fast way to type.
I think the GSMArena team didn't give themselves the time on the keyboard and thus their first impressions interfered with their final judgement.

I respect the GSMArena team's review. But im wondering how could they not get used to this keyboard.
Its WONDERFUL. They look odd but its a total normal qwerty keyboard. The keys are rocker type buttons with the edges raised and it is in the end one click per letter. With the gap between two buttons and the curve in between them, wrong clicks by mistake are sooo less on this. I currently has a P990 and had a 9300 Communicator as well. This is the BEST on typing by a huge margin. The keys are raised, they register with a click easily, the rocker type key makes sure you dont get a wrong click.
I did try a Nokia E61 as well, wrong presses were more common on that than this (did this when buying, wasnt used to either of these)
I hope the GSMArena team give the keyboard another shot :)

> In reply to dan @ 2008-06-06 11:36 from vxvE - click to readThe shortcuts on the screen are permanent as noted in the User's guide, which SE tech support also confirms!
Some users have stated that the shortcuts "may" be removed due to the updated firmware.

SE P1i
The "i" stands for "international" and is sold in the international market.
It's really a PDA instead of a regular phone and is quite pricey.
The phone call quality is quite good but the speakerphone volume must be kept

The cover lens is not available as SE had to make room for a new battery design.

> In reply to Anonymous @ 2008-02-06 05:10 from wu46 - click to readYou need the battery: BST-40 not the BST-33.
The updated battery has a slightly improved battery life and should be recycled fully as I've learned from my P1i from near 0% instead of in the middle ~30-40%. This should help increase the battery life.
Shutting off all other features such as Wifi also helps.
Using only the phone, battery life is ~3 days before recharging!

Quick correction in my review....
UIQ 3 and Symbian 9.x is O/S used not Symbian 3.
Also, forgot to mention another disadvantage of the phone...
The shortcut keys on the phone can be customized but be careful...
Once a shortcut is created, it is PERMANENT as stated in the user's guide and can NOT be removed.
Also, the position of the shortcut can NOT be changed as well.
Customize the shortcuts carefully!!
What a stupid feature to omit, the ability to remove or move a shortcut?! How shortsighted is that?!

I have used a P910i for two and a half years - unfortunately it has now been damaged beyond repair. Does anyone know how I can load the backup from my pc onto the P1i?? I thought this would work no problem but I am told otherwise.....

An added note on RAM: I've used P990i and now have P1i, so I know how P990i lags in terms of memory... It seems that I need to restart the phone once a week so that the memory will not get full/phone will not crash, w/c is a hing of the past for P1i... Used it for a week and never restarted the phone even once (until I updated the firmware, that is.) P990i users should definitely take this into consideration and upgrade to P1i if they can. Only an opinion, though. Hope I don't hurt P990i users out there. Ü

Personally, I think a lot of persons who complain about this phone don't know anything about smartphones or PC Technology at large. I will be getting my phone this Thursday and already I have researched all the features of the phone, when online at http://www.sonyerisson.com and used the virtual phone there. I also contacted my service provider to see if they are able to accomodate the network of the phone.
People!!!! You need to read and UNDERSTAND the capabilities of the phone, it is like a PC where you can install programs, surf the web, emulate other programs, etc.
