Sony Ericsson W960 review: Walkman extreme

Sony Ericsson W960 review: Walkman extreme - read the full textSony Ericsson W960 is aptly the big gun in the Sony Ericsson portfolio of music-centered handsets. Gifted with the scorching 8GB of storage space and a large touchscreen TFT display, a 3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities, the W960 easily stands...

arash: i think it is unfair to make comparisons to the whole of the Sony Ericson brand with one particular example. i think you will find that in the majority of cases, the quality gets steadily better, or is at least of the same quality. I admit, there are some exceptions such as the one u pointed out. I am personally very dissapointed with the quality of the w850, but still. There is no reason why this phone should have any worse quality screen than the w950. I would be willing to bet that they are the same screen (same manufacturer) with a special layer on top.

Ah, my mistake. Memory is flash.
Still, with 4gb Memory Stick Micros the memory really isn't very appealing. Memory Stick Micros are really small so if you use a proper mobile case you can always carry an extra memory with you (I do this) and voila you'll have 8gb memory for practically nothing. I'm not bashing SE, I love them and the W960 is awesome. But it's important not to be carried away with the hype and really test a phone like this thouroghly before a purchase.

The w960i is flash memory, not mechanical. Why would they put a HD in the phone, that would be retarded. Plus, is this bash SE now? I think this phone has a lot to offer.

I'd recommend testing this phone thoroughly before buying it due to some obvious shortcomings that might occur.
First, harddisks are often very unstable compared to flash memories and with flash memories up to 4gb I wouldn't buy this phone for the available memory.
Also, if you're listening to music and the harddisk is shaken the music will stutter. This does not happen with flash memories.
Second, the touch interface is basically the same as on the P1 so if you've tried the P1 and wasn't happy don't expect to like this. I personally hate the P1 so I'll stay away from the w960. You even have to question the need for a touch-screen on this device. It doesn't really have any practial application. The screen is also washed out compared to other SE phones so keep that in mind.
With the back button removed, the lack of a d-pad and the bad touch interface you can expect navigation to be a pain in the @!#!
The main advantages on this phone (Wi-Fi, 8GB HDD, music player, FM-radio, auto-focus camera) can easily be experienced on other phones such as the P1 or the k850 with some minor differences. For example the k850 could be an even better (and cheaper)alternative with a 4gb Memory Stick Pro duo. The turbo-3G will allow fast web-browsing and it has a much better camera and design, not to mention its awesome media center and great music player.

arash: how would you know that? the phone is not yet released, and prototypes sound quality is not the same as the real thing. For anyone reading, I would advise waiting for it to come out before believeing any reviews about anything except general user interface, design, ergonomics, and hardware specs.

Will this phone work in the United States with AT&T? What is the reception like and voice quality? Look nice but sometime Sony Ericsson have poor reception in the USA!!! Thanks.

you need to use the adaptor, no 3.5mm jack.
whatureally hate is the washed screen, i mean, the k750s screen is even sharper! oh, and the cheap plastic! i hope it was just for the fact it was a prerelease version, else ...

Can any of you tell me if you can use the standard 3.5mm head phone with the w960 without going through the bluetooth adaptor?(I am not a big fan of bluetooth) Is there a 3.5mm port or a regular adaptor for 3.5mm headset for this phone as well?

I'm a luck person to have a pre-release model. Just got it. And it's the best music phone I've ever had. Not going to buy an iPOD now. Replaced the W950.
