Samsung i780 review: Mouse included - read the full textThe Samsung "i" line of smartphones have taken quite a lot of different shapes and seen OS implementations ranging from Symbian to Windows Standard and Pro. There are, however, five birds of a feather that do stand out with...

I've had it for 2 weeks, and am very happy. I've had a good VGA Pocket PC before, w/o phone, picked this one instead of half-closed Android or closed and overpriced Apple. This one is great for WinMo tinkering, battery runs for 2 days w/o net, or 12h with online connectivity (fring/palringo/skype..) google maps updates your location for friends, GPS works OK, plenty of clients... Bluetooth works with my Philips AD2P earphones, switches to mono when receiving call. Also transferred files from Thinkpad on first try (I never liked BT because it rarely worked before). Fits well in pocket, wide but slim and light. The biggest flaw: no micro USB and no 3.5" minijack.

I bought i780 last year and sent in for an upgrade twice. But I was far from happy with this phone's performance. It hang on me almost daily when I tried to use some applications. The service people just gave up on trying to fix the problems. The worse problem was the finger pointer. It hang often. I had to reset the phone to get it to work. Well, it is no fun resetting it almost 3 - 4 times a day. I finally traded in for HTC Tytn II. I went back the other day to the vendor, and he complained that 7 more customers had returned the phones with similar complaints. DO NOT BUY THE PHONE! Be warned.

I got my i780 yesterday and having had a Nokia N70 I am more than impressed. Everything works so far. It does not freeze up like the Nokia did and performance wise it is a lot faster.
Thanks for an excellent review. I wanted to get the Omnia but it was out of my reach financially. Nevertheless I am impressed.

> In reply to Samsung i780 is CRAP @ 2008-05-06 10:23 from 0TXvI don't understand. What's the point of going out to the sun and look at Samsung i780 to prove the point that it's black? Have you ever done the same with other mobile phones? Can you honestly see anything with LCD under the sun?

the battery life was so short and i wonder if my new i780 is wrong. after the full charge, used it for few text and the phone battery only lasted 12 hours no calls

is there something wrong with it?

The clock of this pda changes and so sensitive, when I checked its getting delayed not the right time every 2-5 mintes. Why is it like this???. It is CRAP, you need to set the time everytime it's getting delayed. Not worth it to have, I wasted my money with this NO GOOD to have Business phone..

I recently bought Samsung i780 and trust me its really a cool peace. Very good battery back up. They have also provided extra battery which is very useful for heavy travellers. The optical mouse is perfectly sensitive and speed is also good. The disadvantages: 1. The keypad is too tiny to operate. Little difficult to type quick messages. 2. They have not provided the leather case and its not available in any mobile store.
Neverthless, its a good deal and worth buying..!!!

Go out in the sun and what do you see at the 780s screen?
Nothing! It˙s black.

Samsung battery SUCK! My 18 month old Nokia e61 battery last app 3h. 780 new battery last app 3h.

Samsung 780 is CRAP!!!

Got the phone yesterday of a local dealer here in Turkey. Thankfully comes with english language etc. First impressions:
the sound quality of voice calls is only so-so. Compared to an old Nokia 1600 I have lying around, its pretty flawed. Also a newer Samsung U100 slimline is better than this. But by all means the quality is very much acceptable. It just seems to cut silences a bit too aggressively so part of the detail of the conversation is gone.

Other downside is the battery life. Probably Samsung saw that one coming so the phone comes with two batteries included. The phone hardly lasts a day on a full charge and that is when it is just sitting here next to me. Admitted I do touch it a lot (no pun intended obviously!) because apart from these two things, this phone is just Absolutely Nice.

The mouse is great feature. After some trying I have totally gotten used to it. Slight downside is that it tends to become a bit 'jumpy' if more apps are running. With 620Mhz (Im told) this seems somewhat surprising. Could be some graphics issue in WM6.

What else to add. The Keyboard is a little on the small side. It works but your fingers have to be slim. Its not too bad though. I would however have liked to see up/down buttons, they could have nicely fitted to the empty lower left and right space that is now left blank - for no obvious reason to me.

Camera is indeed a bit annoying - one-action only (point, wait arbitrarily long for it to focus and Click a shot is taken). But 2mp is very good here. Sensor must be good.

In comparison, it is exactly the same size as an Apple ıPhone but much lighter. Its, all in all, NICE. A mini-computer,really. A-GPS, HSDPA, Wifi, the lot...

Buy It. Now.
