Sony Ericsson C702 review: Allroad Cyber-shot

I got it today and it's going straight back! I got it as an intended 'upgrade' from a K810i and it's anything but! There's no proper xenon flash (only a 'camera light' that has to be manually switched on every time), there's no ZOOM unless you're in VGA mode (why not in xxMP mode????!!!) and the menu scrolls very slowly compared to the K810i. Also, I fould the buttons very fiddly to use.
Although I will say it looks good, feels good and I like the idea of it being splash and dust resistant. Other than that, I can't honestly say it's any better than my beloved K810i. I think I'll be exchanging it for a K850i instead!

@Stathis:
For free maps I'll try GpsMid on C702. It's a free opensource application using the free vector map data from openstreetmap.org.

Just curious as to whether the LED flash is set up like the one on the C902 or if it's just the bog-standard SE photo-light. Would be great if its the LED photoflash from the C902....

I am a bit concerened about the GPS feature. Can I just load some free maps and use the GPS with them? I don't like that you have to be connected to the internet to use the GPS. It sounds like a trap more than a feature! Besides it looks strange that in the official SE site they don't mention GPS with big letters as one of the main features.

I like this phone. I want this phone. I need to replace my shoddy Nokia 2600 with this phone. This C702 is like the perfect compromise that merges the Walkman Phone & Cybershot phone, something I'd been hoping for in a long time, at the affordable mid-level which it clearly outperforms! Sure there is an absence of SensMe & Shake but you do get the latest iteration of Walkman Player & the PSP Media Center plus excellent speakers. The camera features are perfect too: 3.2 MP sized, autofocus, zoom, & dual photolights that double as a torch. Then there is the multitude of features that make you regret buying a radio, alarm clock, electronic organizer, video recorder, etc. This phone deserves its 9 point score all the more. I certainly agree the styling is unimpressive, but I should say it is functional classy and reminiscent of a certain T610 phone of long ago which raked in Phone-Of-The-Year awards. As for the color, I will just opt for the black version. I hope SE makes more of those than the cyan one because I know many others will go with that color.

i think this is a nice phone, if not very nice looking. I think the colour is a bit bright, and they could hae used a 5MP camera, but it seems like a good camera phone. I don't think best pic has been used, which would have been nice but I still think it's a good camera. I think the sound quality will be good too, if you listen to similar models that use that Media Player, sound quality has always been good, and it's a SE, and SE do dedicated Music Phones. I think the idea's of the newer Cyber-Shots (K850i, C702, C902) try to give the best of everything :in durability, music and Camera. They are all easy to use, I would sya this phone will be good, and if you don't like the design, then get a K850i or a C902. If you want a Nokia alternitive, I would say N95 8GB, and for LG, the Viewity, Samsung the G800, but I'm not sure which Motorolla, probably Z10.

far out, you ppl expect too much. Scratch and splash, and dust resistant means that.It may/may not survive if you charge the phone i a bucket of water, but for trades ppl who sweat, and drop their phone in a heap of stuff this is perfect.
I wonder if the same comments were made aout the shokia phones that are splash and dust resistant?? At least the SE keypad will stay stuck on!!

Controversial looks? What's more controversial is the reviewer's apparent lack of taste.

well, after a few cybershot models that have camera image quality that are below par, this model brings back the image quality back to the level we expect from the cybershot branding, IMO.

The thing is: in product pictures they put a C702 in the sand and in some water. Not honest from SE!

Something resistant is not the same as being something proof. Say its scratch resistant, this means it will resist to a certain degree, but forceful scratching or scratching with a very hard material will scratch it. For something to be scratch proof, it must be made from diamond - the hardest material known to man. Splash and dust resistant doesn't mean you can drown it and store it in dirt. It will resist to a degree though.
