> In reply to Arupananda @ 2009-09-11 23:01 from 9CMd - click to readYeah,i also have n 5500 sport, that was great phone,i'm still use it now, with additional rubber cover.nokia 5500 is failed product, expecially in their rubber keypad...I have no doubt that this 3720 will follow the "success" (failure) of 5500...did u see the bottom cover?i believe it will peel up and tear apart for about 5 month, the 3720 rubber keypad and side button? First the keypad will have some scar/leak for 3 month use, then become bigger, then start to peel off...
Then what u want to do?go to service centre, claim 4 guarantee, then wait 2-3 weeks until they change the keypad, after that,u repeated the same pattern if u're keypad...how if u're 1 years guarantee is over?u will go to nearest sellular shop to sell it...believe me.nokia is very bad in construck phone that contain durability, water resistant,bla..bla..especially rubber keypad, beside that kind of phone,it's okay...
Sorry bad english.greeting from indonesia...

Even the SE W880 can survive more shocks and dust than this phone without being IP54 . And W880 is just 9.5 mm thin and weighs only 71 gm. I think this phone is useless.

"...even the supposedly superior shock resistance (of the Samsung B2100) will hardly endanger the 3720 classic"
I don't think so. Maybe if the potential purchaser was looking primarily for a fashionista phone then, yeah sure. But in all likelihood people who are buying a rugged phone are looking for the toughest one possible, not the prettiest.
IP57, MIL-STD-810F beats IP54 any day of the week. Sorry, but you can keep your pretty phone. I'll go with toughness.

I am surprised that the previous attempt of nokia ... the 5500 ... didn't even get a mention on the review. It was a brilliant set, with beautiful display (though tiny), amazing audio quality and, the most amazing part, Symbian S60 v3 interface. It was also one of the first cellphones whose complete endurance test was carried out by a Russian group ( http://www.mforum.ru/phones/tests/036591.htm ). That should have been the mould for a new set, considering the Achilles' heel of the set being the keypad, which was (one of the worst design flaws the Finns could have come up with ) 'stuck' on the face, and started peeling off after an average of 2 months of usage - and I guess the unusual size of the screen. I still have mine (5500) after 2.5years, somehow stuck together with adhesive and tape, and wouldn't like to give it up for anything (until a better one comes out - maybe with a screen as big as the 3720 - dude, that would be something like N95 on steroids!!).
Some suggestions:
please check the keypad of this phone for similar issues.

Forum Nokia states that 3720 supports H.263 and MPEG-4 as video recording formats. Does that mean that it supports recording video as H.264/AVC? Would that be of higher quality than the 3gpp clip provided in your review?
Thanks for the review, very informative.

The C702 is IP54 as well, it's pretty tough. Mine took quite a battering, and was submerged a few times.

oh my, how many more phones are Nokia going to bring out this year. This looks so similar to any other Nokia. They are just saturating the market. Nothing new, nothing fresh. I know people bash the iPhone, but at least they only produce 1 (yes, that's 1) phone a year.

I not good enought in english but do you suggest that Nokia 3720 is more "tought" then Samsung B2100. I have seen some test of samsung b2100 and 2700. B2100 is really hard and has IP57 class and Nokia IP54 only. I am aiming nokia to buy but samsung is in my opinion much more strong!!!

You should be able to use a Nokia LD-4W* or similar if you're really desperate for GPS right?
Looking forward to the release.
*I think the chargers are compatible so you'd get 1 AC and 1 Car charger.

In the 1st paragraph I meant N97, not N87. Sorry.

> In reply to Anonymous @ 2009-09-01 01:56 from 0dD6 - click to readWhy phones like N87 are not rugged/indestructible/all-proof? It's really simple:
N97 is a high-end phone. It costs a lot. Expensive materials and construction. Producing rugged phones is expensive. So a rugged N97 would be too costly for the manufacturer and too expensive for the end-user. Have you ever wondered why the 8800 are so exrremely basic? Because if they would put a complete feature set on a phone with expensive materials no one would afford it.
A high-end phone as resistant as the 3720 would reach the price of the premium phones like the 8800. Premium phone buyers have a lot of money and no brains. They dump a gold-made phone every year, and they care about status, not water-resistance.
Rugged budget phones make more sense. Yes, they cost more than a normal budget phone, but they are necessary for people who use them at work. You won't see a builder, a trucker or a farmer with an expensive N97. At least it's not common. And they are still somewhat affordable.
