Sony Ericsson W810 review: Walkman on the EDGE

Sony Ericsson W810 review: Walkman on the EDGE - read the full textA few months after launching its new W810 model, Sony Ericsson delivered it to our office. This black twin of the famous W800 model features EDGE and the main menu has undergone slight modifications. All other applications have remained untouched. The new W810 is much more about color emotions, sport spirit, and launching novelties at all costs.

Just got the w810 two days ago. Only made two calls and one txt msg cuz I'm still using my previous phone. Traded in an Audiovox SMT5600 (iMate SP3, etc) for the w810 because the 5600 was giving poor recptn. Also, that damn 5-way button was a pain. Did like the txt msg confirmation of the 5600, tho. Wish the w810 had it for regular txt and not just for pic msgs. Also, I'm not too crazy about the choice of ring tones. I set mine to the "Ringloard" ring tone. Would rather have something like the "standard" ring tone of the SMT5600. I do think the "Ravi" and "Hong Kong Action" ring tones in the w810 are kind of interesting, though :-}
I like the appearance of the handset. It seems to have a lot of cool features. I used to think what's the point of getting a phone with camera, music player, etc. Hence, I got an LG 4010 which is a basic phone with minimal features in a neat, slim, clamb shell design. The w810 is a major contrast to the 4010 and I'm pleased with that.
Can anyone provide a link to a photo of the (limited edition?) white version of the w810?
As for removing the SIM - Yes, a difficult task, indeed. TIP: Use a wooden toothpick to lift the edge of the SIM as you slide the opposite edge with your thumb. Lucky for me, the SIM I'm currently using has a bit of laminate lifted at the edge. So, I use it as a "handle" to lift the card for easy removal ;-]
I'm hoping all goes well with the w810 because my service provider may not offer another exchange. I've tried one Samsung P207, two Audiovox SMT5600s, rejected a Blackberry 7100g... Don't want to push my luck - They'll probably tell me to take a hike :-D
Anyway, great site. Appreciate all the effort put in by all responsible. Reviews are very informative. Thanks to all! (especially my service provider ~heh heh~)

pat you are crazy, I mean, nobody will notice all the disadvantage features you had said, and 9.2/10 it's a good grade?

I'd say that it's more better than w800i. I like it's design!!! But!!!! It's crazy with JOY-STICK!!! The joy stick is too short to press. Hmm... But, however it's cool and Hi lux!!! Nice!!! I want it!!!

I'd say its lot better then K750 & W800 Series, cause it does'nt got a joy stick (Lever) On the front, I have K300i right now & I'm about to change it, cause the joystick does'nt functions very well any more, I used it for more then 6 months, i was very carefull about its joystick & heard about its malfunctioning before having one, But over all its the best hand set u can get in its price, I thought W810 will be the perfect cell phone but the negative point is, it does'nt got any shutter for camera protection ... But it looks are kool ... & i'll gonna get it for sure, no matter any body likes it or not, I'm in love with SE.

I've had this phone for approx. 3 weeks now..

and here are the dissatisfiers (sorry i couldnt be bothered listing the satisfiers)

KEY DISSATISFIERS:

difficult to take out battery, EXTREMELY difficult to take out the sim card (it's locked in once you insert, still possible to remove)

you cannot turn off shutter noises when taking pictures.

camera lag and shutter lag

MODERATE DISSATISFIERS:

there is no flash in camera mode, only a light option

the buttons are very very closely packed together i.e. increased rate of wrong keys pressed

the screen is slightly prone to visible fingerprints.

the keys are hard to adjust to (they are all backwards and mixed around compared to other brand models)

LOW LEVEL DISSATISFIERS:

there is no 'greeting message'

there arent enough games already on the phone

only 2 available key/button tones

can't run games while on a phone call (what a bummer)

battery capacity isn't very large (this phone is meant for strong use i.e. mp3 player)

I personally dislike the calculator layout

and that about sums it up. the dissatisfiers are heavily outweighed though, by the pure sexiness and style once accustomed, the usage is very swift, very feature packed and the screen size often turns me on ;)

overall i give it a 9.2/10

had sony phones for 3 years now and every one i get is better than the last by a long way.
the display on the w810 appears to be a lot better than the k750 and w800 and the night shot function on the camera is miles better, there is a lot less noise on the picture.
had mine for 3 months and i'm incredibly happy. all in its a better all round package than the n91 which is far heavier and much more expensive.

well firstly, i'm sure there are better answers than plainly 'you shouldnt buy this because this or that is coming out'
secondly, i'm getting it and if no one else does i'm still pleased. maybe even more so.

It looks cool. 2 bad it's old in the functions section. N73 & K800i are coming, no sense in buying this...
