Carphonewarehouse have not yet released this phone despite their website advertising the 19th of May as their release date. I spoke to them this morning and they confirmed this. As for other retailers stocking this phone, who knows...

The Samsung F480 has not been assigned to Vodafone alone. Even if you were to do a quick google search, you’d see that 02 are already citing prices for this phone on contract.

I spoke to O2 in the UK this morning they confirmed they are expecting stock on the 26th May.

Eww- you’re upgrading on the Vodafone network!? God help you- get out whilst you can- their call plans suck! On the other hand, Vodafone's mobile broadband has the best coverage and speeds of up to 7.2mbps (which they expect to double at the end of this year!) whilst T Mobile and 3 are still on 1.8mbps and 2.8mbps.

I strongly advise you to wait for the Samsung F480 and not settle for the F490. The phone is greatly lacking in comparison to the F490! However, if you do opt for the F490, you may be able to take advantage of the 14 day/30 day cooling period/ Money back guarantee which sometimes comes with pones.

Yes, Robert, ‘equally proportioned’ is a more fitting word to describe the Samsung F480. The buttons on the F490 also look pretty cheap in comparison to that of the Samsung F480.
As for prices, it depends on who you’ll choose as a network provider. T Mobile will probably be the cheapest (if they plan on supplying this phone). 3 rarely stock descent high end phones, so don’t even go there...
And yes, fashion handsets are overpriced. I owned the Samsung X830 when it came out. Its selling point was it being a ‘fashion phone’ as it was a swivel phone, and so it cost me about £140 to purchase although its features didn’t surpass features on alternative ‘unfashionable’ phones.

I’ve discovered Timtechs, a website which sell mainstream prices for low prices. It is a Canadian/ American based company but they can ship to the UK. Although the price for the Samsung F480 has not yet been disclosed, I was told by an assistant that the SIM free price would be similar to the price of the Samsung Soul (Samsung U900), which is about $509.95 USD, and so comes to about *£255*.

i just rang vodafone and they told me that it will not be released until July 4th, so a long wait i'm afraid. i'm due an upgrade now, should i get the F490 or should i wait. what do youy all think. a dilemma

I'v called vodafone and they tell me that this phone will be released end of may. I'll be upgrading to this free of charge. Carphonewarehouse tell me they'll also be releasing this phone end of may. We'll just have to wait and see.

Cheers for the 3-D view, that is very useful.
In terms of dimensions, the F490 is a particularly thin and long phone, where as, in my opinion, the F480 is much moer equally proportioned.
Also, a judge who sees a phone for ten minutes is no comparison to the real user who uses the phone on a daily basis. I know who's opinion I'd trust!!
I am still a bit concerned over the price, I can't see this being cheap, especially at first. Samsung's previous "flagship" touchscreen phone, the F490, was only released a month or two ago, and I doubt Samusung would want two equally priced, simialr phones about. I can only see the F480 being more expensive and the F490 being lowered in price slightly. However, I can only see people really choosing the F480; overall smaller dimensions, easier interface and better looking! However, I'm pretty certain that after 3-6months, the price will lower, particularly with the i900- which will be their new flagship device- albeit perhaps offered to a slightly different user.
Also, if the F480 is advertised as a "fashion" handset, this allows the company tto add about £100 onto the price! Not really fair I think?

This really gives you a great feel for the sizes of different phones. For those who are focused on purchasing a compact phone, this is really helpful.
Just input the name of the device and their measurements (which I’ve posted a couple of post below this one) and you can get a real feel for the size of the phone.

I would advise to wait for the Nokia N96 and not purchase the N95. The N95 will be dated by the time the N96 will be released, which is not too long from now. The thing with Nokia is that they are constantly releasing successors of their current phones in such as short period of time that your phone becomes quickly dated.
However, if you do opt for the N95, make sure you get the version with the 8gb internal storage as the one with the memory card option is very faulty and has had *many* complaints.

Talking about sizes, here are the dimensions of the following phones:
The Samsung F480 is: 95.9 x 55 x 11.5 mm
The Samsung F490 is: 115 x 53.5 x 11.8 mm
The Samsung 1900 is: 112× 13mm (or 12.5 mm)
So in conclusion, the Samsung F480 is smaller in length than both the Samsung F480 and Samsung i900 which renders it more portable. The Samsung F480 is smaller in depth than the Samsung F490 but unfortunately 1.5mm greater in width than the Samsung F490. However, the Samsung i900 exceeds the Samsung F480 and F490 in the field of depth, because as you can see, the Samsung i900 is the thickest.
As the Croix interface Robert, I have read it has won awards but have also witnessed it being severely slammed by many owners of the F490. I think I’ll judge the Croix interface by the feedback of its users and not some award competition judges who’ve only tested the interface for 10 minutes prior to casting their judgments.
Good luck with phone contracts- I am similarly tired with phone contracts as I am with the windows mobile OS.

I have also been following the i900, but the windows OS has really put me off. The specs sheet is quite similar to that of the F490, but with GPS and the 8gb of inbuilt memory- a big plus.
However, who really needs GPS, and also, if the F480 is accepting 8gb cards and actually runs a usable interface, the i900 is worse in the same areas, for me anyway.
I also considered the F490, but the length of the phone seemed rather off-putting. Also, I realise croix has won many awards, but for what?! It really doesn't look that great, and also, I have read reviews stating that video playback is impossible on the F490, another downside.
For what I want in a phone, the F480 really fits the bill- lets hope that the price is not too high on a monthly contract.

Practically perfect. Although it would be nice to download other apps, I could live without it as long as the preinstalled apps are up to standard. I know people have pointed out the lack of GPS and WIFI ect but realistically, how many people actually use these features on their phone?
The Samsung i900 looks pretty similar to the F480 however its a windows mobile phone. I’ll be dammed if I ever have to use the Windows OS again! Moreover, the i900 looks pretty big, and the extra wifi, internal 8GB memory and GPS really isn’t worth compromising on comfort when it comes to handling a phone. Knowing how Samsung have pushed back the release of the F480, the i900 probably won’t even hit major retailers until October

Web bsed info seems to suggest that i900 will be out in September. Think this will be the earliest, but would sooner wait than get an alternative only to find a better one then does arrive. HTC diamond looked good but no camera flash, SE Experia is closest to spec that I think we both want, but only 3mp camera and not sure about their UI. I have D900 which has been great. Samsung won't give any details about future models unsurprisingly. I would be disappointed if i900 had no camera flash for example, and cannot find specs which confirms either way.
