Samsung F490 - user opinions and reviews

Samsung

Just got back from a hands on demo of the F490 at my local Vodafone store. (Yes really, they got them in today.) As a power user, this phone, while lovely to look at and hold, vindicates two things: a) To date - only Apple have got the touch screen concept right with the iPhone. Each operation on the F490, in particular trying to type a text messages, is a pain. Try it! b) On the other hand, selecting almost any function on my SE K800i is only a few flicks of the joystick away. Why didn't Samsung put the improved touch screen GUI of the F480 (that's 480!) on the F700 so we can take advantage of it's fantastic QWERTY keyboard? Anyway, Vodafone UK provide excellent support (my K800i had broken down - they replaced it on the spot) and I was considering the F490 as part of my upgrade, but it's just too fiddly to achieve basic tasks. But don't get me wrong, if you just want it for social, it is very well made (better quality construction that Viewty), fast and looks 'da bomb'. :-)

I am considering purchasing this phone, but am unsure of the UI that comes with it, I've read it comes with the croix UI, and I have also read that it comes with the new Touchwiz UI? can anyone confirm which UI this phone comes with?

Hey, i am interested in buying/upgrading and want a touch-phone; I currently have a Nokia N80 and i am very pleased. I want something different and unique. All Nokia OS'S are the same, thus i am interested in the Samsung F490 but is the F490 a upgrade on the F700 or is the F700 the better phone? Unfortunately i am unable to get an iPhone, so i have to settle for "2nd best".

i think the phone is a good idea just needed wifi so it can be a more capable multimedia phone as this is the market i think its aimed at. And all you people going on about why not symbian etc... ever used symbian its pathetic, the iphone has good operating but samsungs operating systems have usually been simple but first class.

Comon wake up your idea , Different phone are cater for different market , not everyone wants a phone with wifi or what s*** , when they just want it to be prefect in design with decent function , Thats why there are so many different model out there . How u expect to have a phone with everything inside . Must well wait for company to create a laptop small enuff then u can have everything u want. Get a life n STop Whining .

Looks great, but agree with other comments no WiFi, no GPS and just a doc viewer rather than pocket word etc applications are serious deficiencies. The gloomy colours are also unacceptable. Also lacks voice clarity feature which works very well on D900. Hardly a leap forward.

I reckon this phone is sexy and thats all. People try to sell phones with the "5 megapixel" tag. its just not working anymore. pffft QVGA with 15fps. common maaan. the whole iphone rip off thing and bad OS is not helping at all. good luck samsung

I don't see the point, they aint gonna get nowhere by trying to compete with the iPhone.
