This phone is so heavy! I have just upgraded from a Samsung D900i and can really notice the extra weight.

I owned the Soul for two weeks, and guess what? It spent one in the workshop. At this point, I've owned pretty much every brand of phone, and I've never had one fail on me in the first week. As I mentioned earlier, the phone worked fine until slid open, then I lost the screen altogether.

So how was it other than the lack of reliability. First, the sound quality from the speaker was appalling. I could barely hear people when they talked, and mp3 ringtones that were made from 320kbps, sounded like AM radio quality stuff. I expected to be blown away by the sound quality seeing as B&O was involved...but sadly, it was the worst I'd ever experienced. I don't even care that much about sound quality, and I was complaining.

How about the interface? Generally, it was pretty good. Thank God Samsung smartened up, and used the center key for the menu instead of the internet. But can someone at Samsung please tell me why the bluetooth is under "applications" as opposed to the "connectivity" menu.

I won't comment on camera quality, since the truth is, I don't care. If you want a good camera buy one. A phone camera is really only for spontaneous events (I know there are some great camera phones out there, but that's my two cents on the matter).

Then there's the much hyped "Magic Touch." Pure novelty. There isn't much functionality behind it, and I much prefer regular buttons as they provide better tactile feedback. The haptics just don't do it for me. Also, the touchpad is horribly cramped...and I have small fingers.

I'm not saying the U900 is a bad phone, it's really not. I just don't think it's a very good one either. Perhaps my view is tainted by the unreliability of my particular unit, it just might be. But I think this phone lacks a particular sparkle. It's pretty thin, but lacks any originality in design, it's basically your typical slider. The only highlight is the "Magic Touch," which itself is contrived. The construction is middle-of-the-road. There are much better built phones out there, with more interesting design, and better detailing. Stepping from the 8600 Luna to this, was a HUGE disappointment. So what did I replace my two week old Soul with? Would ya believe it? A Motorola RAZR2...and I love it.

When I am typing an sms the dictionary changes from my language (Norwegian) to some other random language. When i then chances it back to Norwegian it works perfectly. But when I later on are typing a new sms the dictionary is back to some rear language. Do someone know how to change the dictionary language constantly?

I've had this phone for a couple of months now. In summary.

Good Points.

Fast menu system
Greet looks
Excellent touchpad
Very customisable
Very good camera.
Good build quality.

Bad Points

Scratches ridiculously easily.
Battery level indicator misleading. Once off the 1st bar the next 2 bar disappear very very quickly!!
Very poor in call volume, struggle to hear the person on the other end, especially in area with background noise, such as a busy street.
Call using bluetooth headsets are unclear and occasionally break up.

Unfortunately the bad points are all important aspects of a phone to me, especially bluetooth clarity. So overall i dont think this phone is really that good for my needs. Looking for a temporary replacement, until my 18 month contract is up for renewal.

> In reply to Jay @ 2008-08-23 19:37 from jb8jI have a Samsung Soul and have been using it for more than a week.

About the camera, it is as impressive as GSMArena found it to be. Very good photos, very fast camera response (about 2 secondss to save o photo, compare that to the F480, which is much slower, about 4-5 seconds). Personally, I don't use video much, but if you really need VGA or better videos overall, you should look elsewhere, probably the LG Secret or a Nokia Nseries.

About the music, songs are very clear, very much sound detail can be distinguished, no noise, which not all phones can perform. On the other hand, the headset provided doesn't have enough bass. About this issue, I tested the F480 retail headset (a 3.5 mm Samsung adapter and original in-ear headphones) on my Soul and it was brilliant, let alone if you plug in high-end 3.5 mm headphones in the adapter. So the headset is the problem of the lack of bass, not the phone. It's no use using Bluetooth stereo on the Soul, because you waste the potential for very good sound quality.

The user interface is as fast as it can get. The vibration feedback feels very nice. A big plus is that you can personalize themes to the tiniest detail, the color of fonts in menus, highlighting options, icons, everything. A bit of lag can be seen in the music player list, especially if you have many songs in it, and that is because the phone shows the length of every highlighted song, which needs more memory reading. No customizable equalizer presets can be a downside, although I didn't mind, because the "effects" (EQ presets) were enough for me.

A drawback that I noticed and I was irritated by was the fact that you can't install java games (*.jar) as you would on a Nokia, for example. There is a trick (complicated, I know) on the link below on how to do this. Or you can download from mobile internet.

How to install java games on Samsung Soul:

All in all, I can say that I am satisfied with the Soul because it does the job it was made for (unique touchpad, camera and music). I, for one, wanted to choose between the F480 and the Soul. I made my choice and I don't regret. Hope you make yours right.
