With a 256MB SD memory card the V801 is capable of recording 428 minutes of video in 176 x 144 resolution (QCIF) in highest quality mode! Picture quality is not bad at all for a cellular phone!

no, you cannot use this phone outside of japan EXCEPT on the vodafone japan network. the phone is completely locked to vodafone japan, so it will not work with any other provider.

I do not have an opinion on the V801SH because I did not know the phone exists. I use a sharp GX30 and I want to know if the V801SH is better?

The video recorder function is useful! 11 minutes of recording time with the 16MB SD card that came with the kit. Also, the kit came with a application CD-ROM, I haven't had the time to load it into my PC. Does anyone know how it works? I guess I still have to purchase the interface cable from Vodafone in order to load pictures and data from the phone to PC?

there are 2 methods to unlo0ck v801sh.
one is confirmed to unlock which is using test mode of the handset.
but to enter the test mode, you will need special sd card which is provided from sharp and you may not be able to get it.

the other method which is not confirmed is to use the tool for gx30.
i just check the i/o port of my v801sh and it seems lil different from gx30.

hmm,,,hard way isnt it?

by the way, in japan, to sell the "locked" mobi phone is illegal. so if you sue vodafone jp or sharp, you will find the third way...

the phones are completely vodafone simlocked, so even though japanese users can take the phone overseas and use them, they must be used on the vodafone network, ie, you can't just pop in a new sim card and have it work on say, att's network. as of now there is still no known way to unlock the phones.

the lack of bluetooth is a drawback, but it hasn't quite caught on as much in japan yet, even though toshiba came out with a bluetooth equipped washing machine (wtf?).

another thing, this phone is pretty big compared to other phones in japan. same goes for the v801sa

I'm getting the phone activated in Japan and having it sent to Hawaii. I'll find out if the US SIM card will work in the unit.

To V701N User,

Thanks for the feedback and info on the NEC phone. I just bought the V801SH for my wife the other day and I've played around with the many features on it, including trying to play around with the USIM. I still have yet to try it on the U.S. networks. (I'm still hunting around to see if anyone has gotten that thing successfully unlocked...) Who knows? It might just work with 3 or KPN as they are USIM and not just SIM??

Some things I was dissapointed to see were that the Java capabilities were reduced to 128k from the SH53's 256k (so none of my cool 3D games I d/l'd onto my 53 will ever work on hers).

Also, the music player is a little trickier to navigate than with my 53. Now folders have been implemented, which makes it a pain to control what file I want it to play using the LCD remote.

(In other words, you have to set the folder you want to play first before you can start to use the remote.)

I'll let you know more once we get the phone over here for testing. Right now it's with her in China, and as far as I know, she can use that Japanese USIM in her Chinese NOKIA phone... Just can't do the opposite...
