Sony Ericsson P1 - user opinions and reviews

Sony Ericsson

when I bought this phone was a real surprise because I found inside the box a GPS receiver and "wayfinder" application.
I'm not 100% happy because wayfainder not allow to download and save any map. You must have permanent conectivity with wayfinder server for maps.

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade this phone to HSDPA with any fixes?
I have just recently learned that HSDPA is not a hardware! It is merely a piece of software that accelerates data transfer. I know a windows version exists in HTC and PALM devices.
This should mean that there must be a Symbian equivalent too out there somewhere!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
many Thanks

I used the P1i at the weekend and I wasn't that impressed.It didn't seem any quicker than my P990i.It's just an M600i with a 3.2 Megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front for video calling.OK,so they have increased the memory which it desperately needed because UIQ 3 is a very hungry operating system.
Don't be fooled by Sony Ericsson when they say that the P1i is the replacement for the P990i because it's not.They will launch the P990i replacement in the New Year.

Hi All, How does the P1 compare to the W950i ? I have a 950 but the contacts memory is locked not dynamic, hence with nearly 5K contacts to sync it's v v slow + will not sync with PC unless the phone memory is re formatted - painful.

Will the P1 overcome these problems ?

if you are looking for feature rich phone then please don't spend money on phones like N95, n93 etc ... go for p1i it is better phone than any other phone available ... it covers all the drawbacks of p990i ... gives greater power ... nokia Nseries phones don't have document editors so they cannot be business phones .. yes they can be multimedia phones but again p1i can compete with them in this arena as well ..

To the questions below:
The P1i is much better than the p990 (havign used both). Not only is the form factor much better, the keypad is more comfortable for me and since there is so much RAM, you can have a ton more applications running than any other phone. I haven't found a better phone for multitasking. even with the camera, web browser, music player etc... running in the background, I noticed no slowdowns and the phone has never asked me to close an application.

The screen is very readable. Using it at 66% brightness, its readable under a bright indian sun.

You can use alphanumeric entries and there is a setting to see which number is calling.

I haven't had the word editor close yet, mainly due to the larger RAM so don't expect the phone to quit on you like the p990.

Haven't used the headphones, but the loudspeaker music quality is great. Bass buzzes a little, but its comparable to the n95(though not as loud)

Worst thing about the p1i is the lack of a remote control application. I got everything else(I can ontrol my pc from anywhere which is fun)

Between the P1i and the blackberry cruve, the p1i has more features easily. And the keypad is just as good(comparing to both my dads suretype blackberry and my moms qwerty blackberry)

@Tief
Its a tie IMO between the p1i and e90. P1i is nicer looking, and has a better, ore accesible feature set. The e90 has a bigger(internal) screen and qwerty keypad.

The phone doesn't have a 3.5 jack but it supports a2dp.

@christian30
Your message send settings are probably set incorrectly. Go to your service provider and check it out.

@Ian jones
It has a very bright dual-led flash. very high quality

@sm
the p1c doesn't have wifi and english support whereas the p1i has english support and wifi

@abd
Regarding the wifi, the difference of using 802.11b and 802.11g is negligible on a phone. I have confirmed this with developers. Nokia supports the extra wifi, but they don't have any phone that will actually take advantage of the extra bandwidth.
Wifi reception is very good, however you should dieally use it with a linksys or netgear(or other good-name routers) because the p1i is having compatibility issues with my router. But on other routers it works wonderuflly. Webpages load quickly.

For voip, there are a lot of possibilities, though I myself use fring.
You can change the font size in quickoffice. The pdf reader works well and while I haven't tried out the email yet, I have confirmation that it works very well.

I'd recomend this phone as a business/high end luxury phone.

to the guy who ask3ed if messenger is compatible: You can install fring(free) or buy IM+(you can get this free with the includedd software points)

As for the guys who keeps saying the n95 is better. The n95 is a different idea alogether. Its a multimedia phone and all it has is a better camera aand gps. You can get a better gps add-on for the p1i though.
The p1i has a better form factor, has a better keypad and a touchscreen. Plus UIQ is a better platform IMO. More stable.

Hey guys! Don't be stupid again! I've been seeing comparison of P1 and N95 which is totally irrelevant and totally crap. First all, P1 is intended to be use as a business phone while the N95 is more of a multimedia phone. N95 may have been the phone of the year for 2006-2007 and the breakthrough phone for Nokia as it REALLY doesn't have a equal rival in its segment and P1 is not is this segment. Moreover, what I can say is that P1 has greater built quality as N95 as N95 have moving parts as when you drop both phones, N95 has the greater chance of breaking into two big pieces. As I have been reading lots of REAL reviews on P1 and N95, N95 does seem to have better signal reception than P1, meaning that if you are on the cell edge, chances are, N95 has still signal bars for you to make calls while P1 will be having a "No Network Coverage" message. Considering the price here in the Philippines, the introductory/initial price of N95 was at 40K pesos, and now, already at 27K to 28K, with a marginal of depreciation of 12K to 13K within 6mos time, while P1 initially at 30K, now 23K only after one month. NOW, if you will excuse the chase, have PEACE within yourselves if you really want a P1 or buy another model like N95 or even E90. Ciao!
