thank you. it was the answer I had expected. still...good news. to sum up, the lack of a GPS receiver should not put us off when it comes to buying this phone.

Vlad & Josua
Apparently, you can indeed install GPS software on the P990, but because there is no on-board GPS reciever in the P990, you'd also need to buy one of those (around £80GBP), and connect it to the phone via bluetooth to enable full functionality of the GPS software. Without the reciever there is nothing for the satellite to communicate with.
This info came from TomTom customer service as I also have recently acquired GPS software, and was looking at buying the P990 to run it through, but couldn't understand how a piece of software could turn the phone into a GPS reciever. Turns out it can't!
Hope this helps

TO VLAD. Are you Romanian? Pentru ca si eu sunt.:)Are you positive about the GPS? Because most sites I've scrolled over say that the only major drawback is the LACK of GPS compatibility. If it were so easy to fix, I don't think they would write it in the first place unde DISADVANTAGES. hmmm...what sort of bluetooth device? I would like to use the PHONE as a GPS navi system so as to be able to get rid of my old handheld GPS.

TO JOSUA. Any GPS with bluetooth can work with P990. You only have to buy software that is supports SmartPhones and it also can be found. One of the reasons why I buy this phone is that I will use GPS with it.

Hi guys!
Been using the P910i for well over a year now, was using the P900 before that. I'm glad SE went back to long metal keys defiately better than the regular black buttons. But gettin bored of using the same thing but cant find an alt to the new 990. I wish they could have made it smaller & improved upon the antena as too many calls are dropped!
Can any one suggest a good alternate to consider??
Cheers!

I would appreciate an answer from someone competent to give it. P990i lack GPS, which makes me think twice about buying it, since it is a very useful feature. Is it a matter of software or hardware? Can a GPS receiver be added, somehow? And can the necessary software be installed? Or is GPS for P990i simply out of the question? Thank you!

thanks to all the people who explained how the flip was removed! im soooo excited and all over this phone! im ready to trade off my nokia 9500 once this phone hits the market! im tired of switching phones and all my life ive only had nokia phones. i guess i hit the roof with my nokia 9500. coz nothin can get better than this, so now im venturing in to non-nokia phones. i hope this p990i proves to be a worthy successor of my 9500. the p990's nearly perfect. everything ive ever dreamed of in a smartphone! i hope this will end my switching dilemma, but you know, who can say. smartphones get smarter and smarter everytime....

I asked the SE guy from their road show yesterday. They say the P990i will either come out at the end of this month or early feb if everything go smoothly. He also tell me tat they are upgrading the HP memory stick from 2GB to 4GB. still testing whether the phone can support or not. That might be their delay from launching.

While browsing through a massive ammount of forum post, people are convinced since sony is trying hard to kill bugs from the new OS the EARLIEST would be march
OPINION: they made an improvement with the keypad from the p910 from the p900 but now were back to keys the size of rice! cmon sony, get ur act together..
