Sony Ericsson P990 - user opinions and reviews

Sony Ericsson

The smaller screen is a bit of a worry. They should just change the keypad of p990 to p910i. SonyErics missed big time on this unwanted qwerty.

Regarding all the questions, the P990 or P990i will be release on 1Q of 2006 so like you guys i am very excited about it and getting impatient, i was thinking about buying another phone but hey it's worth the wait.

About the Excel, Word and etc. yes this phone supports them even with the P990i i am not sure about the P990. but of course every phone that has been released theres always an update on it. You can get the updates from web site groups or from the SE website.

i really hope this phone comes out soon!

Can anyone tell me if the "palm" functions of this phone include things like Documents to Go - ie an Excell and Word file transfer, view and edit capability? I am thinking of this against the Nokia 9300 and am no expert in any of them, just sick of carrying around a Palm, a mobile, a camera and an MP3 player which I next to never listen to - does this thing actualy work and do what it says?

So what's the main differences between the p990, n92, and e70. I'm getting a new phone and so far my eyes are set for the p990, but if the n92 or e70 are better I may have to reconsider.

The real competition i see for the p990 is E70 and the N92. Now we gotta wait and see till all of them are released...hmmm. talk abt making right choices.Gosh, verstality well-defined though!..Cheers!

Yes you can remove the flip, just like with the P900/P910i Etc. You get some tools in the pack to remove it. The quickshare logo at the bottom pops off and there should be little screws underneath.

It very easy to do.

@Bhav:

The flip comes off. It's an option. I think you change the lower part entirely, but SE says it comes with the package. Check out this link:

Too bad d pics with the flip off aren't shown prominently. I think it looks better without it.

Both Stuff and T3 magazine mentioned that P990 will be out in January. Would they be good reliable sources? Also, T3 did mention that P990 is one of the mobile phones to come out in 6 weeks, which would bring it to the 2nd week of Feb, latest. I wonder if it's possible. I hope so. Anyway, so many palm phones are coming out this month. Sony Ericsson may do well to release P990 this month too. I wonder too if W810 may be released before hand because P990 may not be ready yet, and Sony needs a new phone release, if not they would have no high end phones for 3 months out.

I've finally made up my mind. I'll be buying this phone (After a last minute challenge from the w810). I have to admit though, a screen resolution of 240x320 on a screen this size is pretty poor. The D600's screen has the same resolution and because it's so much smaller its beautifully clear and crisp. I can't help thinking the pixels on the P990 may be big enough to distort images. Hope not. Although the fact that it's touchscreen makes up for the lack of really high resolution 5 times over.

Still though, not what you'd expect from a company involving Sony who are renowned for quality displays...Same with the screen on the new w810 too, a low resolution for its size.

In my opinion, if they sorted their screens out. SE would without question be putting out the best all-round mobile phones on the market.

Ombewa

Adding EDGE to this phone would be downgrading it.

It currently has 384kbps 3G data transfer.

The newly announced w810 has Class 10 EDGE but that only give a rate of 236.8kbps. So adding EDGE to the P990 would be very bad idea indeed.

I suspect that a non-3G little brother in the PSeries will probably come along soon and that'll have EDGE.

Forgot to mention, when the flip is detatched, it does not leave the "gap" you were worried about as removing the flip will uncover a very handy qwerty keyboard. Pics:

The flip Is detachable, probably get a little screwdriver in box like previous 'P' models. it was really easy to do on the p900 so hopefully same process.Cant wait for this to be released, sony are the best and this is a revolution in pda in my eyes.3g,magapixel camera,wi-fi, cant ask for any more.
