Dmitry, 18 Nov 2008Why won't SE make their own OS? It would be far better than Windows Mobile. The really should ... moreSymbian is ok but WM is a complete os. Flexible, powerful but quite complicated for the newcomer. People who don't understand WinMo tend to get frustrated and blame the OS rather than themselves.
If you dont have a pc then you download .cab files directly to your Windows mobile. If you have a pc then you can install exe and msi files(for PPC) through your pc using activesync.
what is the WM game or software format is? like java is .jar and symbian is .sis/.six
Why won't SE make their own OS? It would be far better than Windows Mobile. The really should try to come up with something better.
There's got to be some kind of filter on voting otherwise brand fanboys would vote straight 10's and brand haters would vote straight 1's.I'd imagine gsmarena put a limit of 10,9,9 on top models and a base of around 6.Votes of 1,1,1 will be accepted but market up to the base value. As soon as the xperia X1 hit number1 spot on gsmarena it attracted some ridiculous characters and no doubt a flurry of low votes, seems very immature to me!I mean you do all this just to see nokia n82 or whatever phone at number 1.>rolls eyes
Danny, 18 Nov 2008As far as dropping price because demand high supply low??? Think about the I-Phone when it fir... moreVery good point. Exactly the same thing happened with Nintendo's N64. Sold so well that after 6 months the price was cut by almost half. Anyone remember that? The controversy it caused? It was so bad, Nintendo had to offer a free game to everyone who bought theirs before the price cut...
What\'s it like as a phone?
Works very well. Signal strength seems good, better than the Pro in this respect, and holds on to signal while in call very well. Had a few dropped calls but only in known black spots. Battery life is good and sound quality/volume also good.
Navigating to the place to make an outbound call?
There is a send hardware button , which opens the standard Windows smartdialer.
What does it do when the phone rings? (pop up? etc)
Standard Windows Mobile fare, a pop up which can be disabled.
What about when an SMS comes in? Or if you want to write one?
Once again standard WM. Pop up, sounds etc can be configured. To write WM messages.
Is user is able to text message single-handedly?
You can, it’s easier for me on the screen, as I use TouchPal, you can on the keyboard but adding Capitals, figures etc tricky one handed.
Display in sunlight? The X1 has a slight edge as it seems to have one less layer of plastic in front of the screen for light to bounce off.
How solid is the slider mechanism, is there any slop or lateral movement in it?
This is very good, very positive, satisfying click once open, very little to none lateral on this one, slightly more when shut than open but still good.
People were standing in line, long line, in front of the Apple Store - day after day _ I saw them.
I do not see any lines in front of any stores for X1!
X1 is available widely. The selves are full.
X1 is Not a big hit at all.
Anonymous, 17 Nov 2008Se fanboys try to keep up the image - but too many problems and all the fact say: X1 is a fail... moreAs far as dropping price because demand high supply low??? Think about the I-Phone when it first came out... 1 month late they dropped the price $200. If you make enough money right off the bat b/c it keeps selling out you can afford to drop the price... as long as you have already met/exceeded your profit goals
Soemone asked me before:
If all the problems are true how come the rate is so high for this phone on this website?
Well, I thought SE PR staff and fans the responsible.
Now, someone noted (few comments below) votes 5 below not counted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That makes the voting result totally INVALID and FAKE!
Obviously, users with problem will not give 5 or more and they are totally counted out from the result.
Another example(itf it is true) how corporates manipulate the customers.
Anonymous, 18 Nov 2008Conclusion
In terms of size and shape, the Xperia X1 is really not bad at all.
Unfortuna... morebet they hadn't installed xperiatweak...Serious x1 users can be found at www.xda-developers.com
BTW, in my family we use WM for long time, and we still use an old device without ANY crash!
I am not a big fan of WM but it can be reliable even in a HP device (very old and used daily)- which not famous about its reliable units. :))))
As I have written before: we do not need pro-review since the model is out - we can try the unit ourself and see the other users´ review.
But, at least this review do not cover-up the problem:
CRASHES - several Crash on one day!!!!!!!!
(as many of us experienced - this problem was not fixed!)
I think it is not acceptable!!!!!!!
Battery life on the Xperia X1 is just average — you can get about a day and a half if you don’t use WiFi at all.
If you do a little surfing via WiFi for an hour or two, however, expect to have to charge the X1 at the end of the day.
We also experienced a few problems with our review unit, as the X1 would crash a few times during the day, and the problems persisted even after we hard reset the device and started from scratch.
To be fair, a little sticker on the side of the X1’s packaging indicated that the device is a “trial unit /prototype” so perhaps the stability problems were due to firmware that’s not fully baked yet.
In terms of size and shape, the Xperia X1 is really not bad at all.
Unfortunately, the thing that really lets down the X1 seems to be the Windows Mobile operating system itself, as Sony Ericsson just doesn’t go far enough with its customisations to minimise the problems with the operating system.
My verdict? The hardware is nice, but for the price, Sony Ericsson really needs to look at where HTC is now with its latest Touch handhelds and really bring the X1 up to speed both in terms of performance and cost.
Pros: Nice design; fits well in the hand; beautiful high-resolution screen.
Cons: Interface still needs work; stability issues; thumb keyboard too flat and closely spaced.
Anonymous, 18 Nov 2008For a moment I thought you are a SE staff who tries to troll. It had happened before, But sinc... moreWhile each phone has its good and bad points, I think its really easy to see which commenters just do not like Windows and the Xperia.
People “count” features so they know which is better…. well, I say it's the implementation of these features. This is where the Xperia excels(VGA camcording with a screen to compliment etc)
Windows mobile is not broken or slow just because a user dosen't know how to use it . Windows mobile has way more functionality than other operating systems. If you are going to compare the Xperia to other devices you must compare all parts not just the bad ones from this phone and the good ones from the others. I could go on and on but I'll leave that to you!!!
Revenant, 17 Nov 2008You're right - I got too personal and for that I apologize. However, I still can't see where ... moreFor a moment I thought you are a SE staff who tries to troll. It had happened before, But since you have showed self critic It seems you are a real user.
So, I explain my views again.
I meant ´late´in a sense that it is not for the current market needs. For 2009, I think the slim, fast phones wanted.
X1 is relatively thick, unreliable, and the camera capabilities are limited.
Late means this phone on todayś market has no ahhh effect and certainly not for 2009.
Personal experience not always reflects the whole picture.
You may got a good working model, but too manyusers got the same or similar problems. For example the battery drainage. On paper the battery seems fine, it should provide excellent performance.
But, it does not. I suspect some manufacturing problem or design error. Someone mentioned RAM problems.
Wifi drop-outs are very common.
When the hardcore SE fans say buggy software is fine for a new model - it raises the flag for me.
I think we should not tolerate any buggy software for 1200 USD - initial price for the X1!
I think the cutting edge phones are slim, with good camera specs, with large screen, and probably TV (digital) capabilities also expected from the users.
I think for the mass the keypad is not needed.
No wonder that Hikaru is like HTC HD, Omnia, or Iphone like.
If we look back, the big hits: V3 , Iphone etc. were all not just relatively reliable but also very compact compare to their competition.
X1 not offer anything special, even the HTC HD is more attractive for many people with its largedr screen etc.
Samsung Omnia with its price and over all performance also a big competition. X1 has hard time to compete with 2008 models - so it is late! X1 would have been fine for the 2007/2008 market if it would have been reliable.
I think for 2009, X1 has no chance.
And if Motorola or Iphone (or Samsung) comes out something outstanding SE will be out for not for 1 but for 2 years. And any of the company can do that as we know.
Anonymous, 17 Nov 2008You making a personal attack! You have no argument! :))) SE phones go through the same path... moreDon't you people know Megapixels is just a marketing tool?On an average 6 x 4 print you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 5MP and 20MP.Any photography enthusiast will tell you the lens and sensor are the most vital components on a camera.Of coarse if you want to print photo's the size of Billboards then your going to need a 10MP cam but for regular snaps 3.2MP is sufficient. Please research before posting nonsense such as 'should have 8MP camera'
for ppl who realise this fone is junk plz vote 5,5,5 as gsmarena dont count the votes below 5 for xperia. its a shame se made such a expensive fone dat dosent even work my m8's xperia keeps droppin calls n rebooting very very poor
Anonymous, 17 Nov 2008You making a personal attack! You have no argument! :)))
SE phones go through the same path... moreYou're right - I got too personal and for that I apologize. However, I still can't see where you're coming from. Whether the specs were outdated or not, that doesn't mean that the phone was late.
As for reliability, I guess that all comes down to individual experience. Me, personally, I've never had a problem with SE's phones. Well, except that time when my W960's touch screen went a bit squiffy, but a software update fixed that. I've used Samsungs and Motorolas and, while I never had any reliability issues, I couldn't stand the UIs. I then used Nokias for years, but everyone of them died within a year of purchase. So I decided to try something new and SE have done it for me ever since.
I know a few people with an Xperia, and they all say it's the best phone they've ever had. And SE have quite a lot riding on this phone, so I refuse to believe that they're not gonna fix the issues that some people ARE experiencing.
As for the specs being outdated, only really the camera. And it doesn't pretend to BE a camera phone, so that's not really an issue.
The Hikaru DOES sound very tantalising, and I was tempted to wait, but I don't expect an official announcement for maybe another couple of weeks, or possibly even the MWC in Feb, again. And we prob'ly won't see it on sale til, at the earliest, May or June, but prob'ly nearer August...
