nokia looser is right, by vga resolution can also make the color look sharp and bright, amount of color is just talking about variation of color,do you think there is an object which has 16 million colors variation? can you count them at once sight ? 16 million colors have many weakness like can make the phone to be expensive but useless, make the battery down fast, u can't enjoy the color at full ability but u waste much money for this.what a shame!!! look at resolution device although the device can also push the battery down but the device has many purposes( u can watch vga video at real quality, see good quality of camera pictures etc).fortunetly, 1500Mah LI-POLIMER (not LI-ION) can cover it so the phone will has longer life than nokia right now.
this phone has a VGA meaning you can adjust the color up to 256k or more than that if you want to...

in reply to Zee. My friend, the wm smartphones work better if they have good rom, the xperia has 256mb rom and 512 ram, stupid samsung has 128 rom and 256 ram. So, it will work slower twice than xperia, even with 624mg processor. Xperia has 528 mg processor and beleive there is almost no difference. Xperia has resolution 480*800 pixels, samsung twice little only 240*400, so SE dyspley twice better by quality. SE has qwerty keybord, samsung not. SE has 3.2 mp camera, and samsung 5 mp, but everyone know that 3.2 mp SE camera is equal by quality to 5 mp cameras of Nokia or samsung. Xperia has steel cover, samsung only cheap plastic. And the most important, SE phones are the best and the most user friendly, but the most stupid phone is samsung. This know even people who do not know about phones, and the biggest part of samsung sales make women. I just give you advice, because nobody beleive know more about phones than me ( I mean among users, not companies of course).
I'm really sorry for XPERIA poor screen(65k)

But I still don't know whether XPERIA can edit the document formats
Perhaps we have to install an application to do so...

1st reason, the Windows Mobile-based handsets can only support 65k color screen. Although some WM Smart phones (such as LG KS20) have 262k Colors screen, but 65k Colors is effective
2nd reason, with more than 65k colors in its screen, will affect its battery life
3rd reason, the XPeria's 65k colors screen is nice! Almost same like another Sony Ericssons's 262k Colors screen phones
My problems with this phone are:
1.resolution (because most of programs and cool games support 320x240 or 640x480)
2.i think it will be higher then 800$
3.date of release (others competitors will give us earlier then this shitty 3rd 2008 or 1st 2009) shame...

Why has only 65k ? Because the screens that has 16milion collor the battery is weak.
I wish it had a clamshell design like E90 or tilt design but that's nitpicking,,I too am saving for this ...,My contract is up around november time so hope its out before then and any probs ironed out,,,bye
has so many nice features...but only a 3.2 pixel cam...shame!!! at least a 5 mega pixel would suit this phone
And to add to my last post some may wonder why some phones have a 262k offering well they are proprietry operating systems NOT a smartphone using complex software apps,,,the most they will use is java which is still very basic,,no way could it handle games at 30fps and 16 million colours and java is very,very ram intensive also
16 bit screens are 65k colours
18 bit screens 262k colours
24 bit screens 16.7/8 million colours
using the above 18 bit does not fit into the equation correctly as in 8 bit 16 bit 24 bit 32 bit and so on,,
Some lcds are now capable of producing 7 billion and 4 trillion colours but who is going to count them??
The xperia is using a 16.7 million colour pallette but the software is easier to write at 65k ,in fact all the past software are written at this 65k pallette so rewriting all the software to the next code of 24 bits is a waste and the difference can only be seen in specific photographs or by using a histogram..In general most screens are 16 million but do not show that amount and anyway the colours are only used in shading and the amount of shading over a 320 pixels display can only ever be 320 colours??????
In the past we had black and white screens with some grey shading and if we put a 16.7/8 million in place of the mono lcd it would just show up the black and white colours with a bit of grey shading in between "but" the specs could say that this phone has a 16 million colour lcd screen but because the software has only black/white output thats all you would get..
My dads cannon has a 12 bit, 2 inch, 120,000 pixel polysilicon lcd display which is 4096 colours( 12 bit ) but because of the pixel density the screen is super sharp and lifelike,,so as someone said earlier i would much rather have a 65k screen with big pixel density than a 16 million colour screen at qvga...
