BillGeorge, 29 Aug 2017Last night (8/29 11:45 pm) I received my shipment notification for my pre-ordered Essential PH... moreit is compatable there is just no verification process. If you are already a verizon customer you just swap sim cards from your old device. New customers are out of luck however.

Last night (8/29 11:45 pm) I received my shipment notification for my pre-ordered Essential PH-1 phone and 360 degree camera. The confirmation email mentioned that the PH-1 is not compatible with the Verizon Network. Early information from Essential said the phone would work on all CDMA and LTE4 carriers, (plus most other carrier's networks) what's going on here? I'm wondering if Verizon can explain this problem to the U.S. Public Utilities Commission. Is Verizon playing hardball because they didn't get an exclusive? Is Verizon upset that they didn't get to put their junkware and skin on the Pure Android operating system?

Emma, 25 Aug 2017Ugly phone, overprice, 2015 spec for 2017 price, never buy thisagreed, i have a 2915 motoxpe, 3gb ram, lcd screen and 3000mah battery... the ph-1 other than its fancy material is not enough for me to spend $700usd for the upgrade. plus motoxpe has memory card, microusb and 3.5mm, stereo speakers... maybe next year Andy... or the Pixel XL2 depending on price...

I think it comes with the bootloader unlocked. It should be easy enough to root.

Overall it is not a bad phone, but for me it is definitely a no no because it doesn't have an SD card slot, sim slot, 3.5mm jack.
I will either wait for the S3 from Sharp, or I'll get the S2 (which has the sd card slot) and is available in Europe, while the essential phone is available only in the US.
Also, can you root this phone? Has anyone done it so far? If i can't do that, then it is useless to me.

If you can put in a SIM, you can add an SD Card slot. More memory needed. The price is too high for a new entrant, you need to gain acceptance and "compete" on something; it may as well be price because your specs are pretty ho hum.... everyday run of the mill spec's. Nothing new here and nothing special. Move along folks.

It would have been the best phone of the year with the best value if it had a better camera, longer battery life, and $200 cheaper. And also if it wasn't stuck with awful Sprint.

It isn't an ugly phone. The S6, S7 edges, S8 are overrated and ugly phones to me. I remember when I thought the S6 edge was the most beautiful phone ever. After trying out the gimmick called edged displays, it got sickening and tiresome pretty quickly because how it affected my typing.

Design is design. After a few years whatever beautiful phone you will see will become ugly and tiresome. Everyone else from iPhone 8 to S9 will have a design similar to the Sharp Aquos, Mi Mix, and Essential. This is the direction we are headed now, headphone jack or not.

They cannot figure out how to ship it to my physical address and they won't ship to our PO Box. Have been getting online orders delivered by other retailers like Amazon for 15 years. Not real happy!

I preodered after Rubin said phone would ship within 30 days. Months after that time passed i finally receive email to complete order. The email says my phone has been built. I pay and receive an email promising shipment within 7 days. The 7 days come and go and no shipping confirmation. I contact Essential for an update and, surprise, they dont know. I cancelled my order. My initial faith, given on the strength of Rubins reputation, has been exhausted. Over promising and under delivering is bad business.

I wanted to jump on this pre-order the second it came available but there were just too many things that I consider "essential" that were missed or executed poorly. Shaky camera performance (related to software and old spec camera modules) is bad but appears to have gotten better with a recent software update. No OLED screen is a huge disappointment but I can live with the LCD. No SIM card isn't a deal breaker for me but it couldn't hurt. For me, the biggest issue is the lack of water/dustproofing. At this point in smartphone evolution no phone over $500 should ever lack this. I don't plan on taking my phone in the water or into any dust storms but with such an obvious thing overlooked it made me question what other things did they skip to rush this phone out.

It's too bad because I'm really loving the "look" of this phone but for now I will wait for the Pixel XL 2. If Essential swooped in and had Android O on the PH-1 by the end of August I would reconsider. For me, next to the way a phone feels, the speed that it gets updates is what makes me choose my phones.

A nice looking phone but awfully heavy at 185 grams! Samsung's Galaxy S8 is only 155 grams. I love compactness in all phone sizes - this is the appeal of smaller bezels for me but weight plays a part too. A phone weighing 185 is not exactly compact.

A really impressive phone with no OLED. Dealbreaker for me. This phone would look so much better with those deep blacks.

Stefo2000, 20 Aug 2017It seems great but I have one question, why would anyone buy it for 720$ when LG V20 is much l... moreNot cheaper definitely. And this phone costs 699$ when you order from their website (shipping included i believe). While the V30 will most likely be better in every single aspect, this phone is focused on modularity and a clean Android experience.
While it may not be the best phone of 2017, it was by far the most hyped up and it's really hard to live up to the hype.
