Google Android Go

Google unleashed the Android 9.0 Pie at the beginning of the month with a bunch of new features and polished design. Today the company introduced the Go edition of the new OS and the improvements it would bring to ultra-affordable smartphones in developing markets. According to the official blog post, the new OS has a 500MB smaller footprint, the boot is faster and more secure and will offer a dashboard for tracking and monitoring data consumption.

The phones with Android Oreo (Go Edition) and the upcoming devices that will be with the Pie variant have some lite pre-installed apps like Maps Go, YouTube Go, Gmail Go that work in offline mode and are stripped of the less used features. Google announced some updates that will be extra helpful to the users in the developing countries, like the audio reading of a webpage via Google Go while highlighting a word to make following along easier.

YouTube Go, for example, uses less data, does not play videos in 1080p or 4K and can save videos for offline enjoyment. Maps Go also arrives with a new neat feature - the step-by-step navigation can now be used even in an environment with poor coverage or unstable connection. The Phone app has caller ID, and spam detection and Assistant Go does the most basic things but works with languages like Indonesian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish.
