" I would never recommend buying an android again." Only if are low-end or mid-range, in the high-end aren't bad. Samsung gives long support and excellent optimization

No it's not a good idea to use second hand Iphone since you don't know what is the exact reason for the first user to sell it off unless you want to try your luck.
