unlock version by apple
-if you bought your iphone sealed, meaning the box is still sealed with plastic, never opened, box seal opened only for you, buying it... or you opened it yourself, inserted a sim, it worked, then it is the unlock version by apple. you can update the software, and will still remain unlocked. because when you update the software, it will update to the latest version but it will go back to the default settings. its default settings is unlock settings... because its the unlock version done by apple.

-if you bought it box's plastic seal is already wrap out, plastic seal destroyed or box not sealed with plastic, it is already tampered, meaning the unit is originally the lock version by apple, the store who sells it opened it then tries to unlock it by their store technician. yes it can be unlocked, but you cannot update its software version because it will go back to original default settings- the locked to a network settings.simple...

Iphone 3.0 is software update but would be pity if 3G prsent would lagg behind.
Most of soft wares are free downloable but only Lite Demo versions useless to max use.
All phones bought from usa europe elsewhere are locked in original pack, diff is charger plug three pin ot two with usb connect.YellowsnOw software needed to jailbreak but restricted to previous version 2.2.1 unless next update launched.The Catch

Models made before 24 Feb have a faulty earpiece speaker requiring it to be taken to a repair centre to be replaced by one from a different manufacturer.
V20 update withdrawn after people who'd set the security settings were unable to enter their code.
Poor fitting case in the top right corner there is a gap which will allow fluid and dust ingression.
NAM model withdrawn from sale after issues with connecting to the 3G network.
Poor camera quality, Carl Ziess lens proven to be a worthless marketing ploy.
The old adage holds true, you get what you pay for.
