iPhone 2.0 SDK: The No Multitasking Myth
March 13th, 2008
Daniel Eran Dilger
Certain pundits have developed a rash of malignant concerns about iPhone 2.0’s SDK. The first issue they’re scratching at is the iPhone’s apparent inability to run multiple applications at once. The suggestion is that the iPhone is a multitasking impaired appliance just like the original Mac or the Palm Pilot, and unlike the supposed multitasking powerhouse that is Windows CE, which powers Windows Mobile devices. That’s wrong, here’s why.
The iPhone is Unix.
The first clue into discovering how the iPhone works is a look at its core OS. The iPhone runs Apple’s same kernel as Mac OS X: a hybrid of Mach and BSD that hosts a standard Unix subsystem. It supports multiple concurrent processes and multiple users.
At this point, it’s useful to point out that the Palm OS was also built on top of a multitasking kernel, but Palm only licensed it for use from Kadak as a single-tasking environment. That made the Palm OS very much like the classic Mac OS from the mid 80s: to launch a second application, the first had to be shutdown.
Apple doesn’t face the same problem with the iPhone; it owns the iPhone’s kernel and faces no other external technical limitations to prevent multitasking. The ability of the iPhone to answer a call, pull up the Maps app while the call is in progress, and then follow a link to a web page before ending the call was demonstrated in one of its first advertisements.
The iPhone rings when browsing the web, music plays in the background while performing other tasks, and can check emails periodically in the background. It can clearly multitask.
In Steve's keynote demo he showed a bunch on multitasking with the iPhone.
Thing like listening to music which fades down when a call comes and looking up stuff on the internet and sending emails while talking on the phone.
So yeah it can do that kind of stuff.
You should also know that multitasking depends also from the network, not from the phone alone, in 3G you can do a lot more than on edge as you need bandwidth...

...hang on a minute, the iPhone can do this, hey what's it called when a phone does a few things at the same time?

It's just annoying that Apple included all sorts of advanced features but cannot even include the basic features like received sms forwarding and mms sending... It sold a lot of units because of reasons other than it's features. The main reason it sold a lot of units is because of the Hype and superb advertising. and a lot of people are not yet buying it because they are hoping that the next iphone will include the basic features that were excluded in the 1st two iphones.
I.H, 31 Oct 2008Can anybody tell me how the battery life of the IPhone is and if its easy to text. I really am... moreits ok when u get used to it
you cannot forward sms that u've recieved

overall its ubercool and is very enjiyable apples got it coverd here....
Anonymous, 01 Nov 2008But it sold 12.5 million pieces and became the 3rd phone vendor in 15 months, obviously the m... moreYour quote is how misinformation spreads. Apple was the 3rd phone manufacturer for that time period, not of all time.
Please give credit where it is due, and applaud Apple for a job well done for the past few months, even outselling RIM (BlackBerry).
But saying that they're the third phone manufacturer in the world right now? That's a fanboy talking and trying to get away with it.
The iPhone is great. I always recommend it to anyone. It is THE phone at the moment. But when you know that it doesn't do half of the things you expected it to, you inform other people, like what I'm doing here.
As a business user, a SmartPhone (you know, one that multi-tasks) is essential. This is NOT a smartphone. Not even the WORLD BANK CHIEF can change facts.

Well, like I said, immature bankers brand this as a smartphone, whilst those experienced teenagers will go for the Nokia N97.
Acceptance is part of the solution. If you guys accept that this is a smartphone, then it will stick to the same formula, instead of upgrading to its full potential.
I gotta hand it to you though, that parallels reference was a good one! LoL
But it sold 12.5 million pieces and became the 3rd phone vendor in 15 months, obviously the market loves it and do not care about MMS and the other cheap phone features
The device is a glorified ipod. completely overated. it does not support the following: video calling; voice activated dailing; forwarding sms; sending & recieving mms; copy/paste; switching off predictive text; bluetooth file transfer; video recording; fm radio; A cheap phone does more than this overpriced one does

Intel Pulls Back Execs' Comments on iPhone
10.24.08
by PC Magazine Staff
A statement by Intel, released Thursday, appears to slap down executives who reportedly made disparaging comments about the iPhone.
Intel executives Shane Wall and Pankaj Kedia criticized the iPhone in a session at the Intel Developer Forum Taiwan, as reported by ZDNet Australia. The comments dealt with the iPhone and its ARM microprocessor, which Intel competes against with its own line of embedded microprocessors, including the Atom microprocessor.
But Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of Intel Corporation's Ultra Mobility Group, repudiated the comments in a blog post on Thursday. (Intel does not link individual posts.)
"As general manager of the Group responsible for Intel's ultra-mobility products, he acknowledged that Intel's low-power Atom processor does not yet match the battery life characteristics of the ARM processor in a phone form factor; and, that while Intel does have plans on the books to get us to be competitive in the ultra low power domain - we are not there as yet," the post stated. "Secondly, Apple's iPhone offering is an extremely innovative product that enables new and exciting market opportunities. The statements made in Taiwan were inappropriate, and Intel representatives should not have been commenting on specific customer designs."

I tell you y you do not understand, because with bluetooth you would send ILLEGALLY the files to other devices, APPLE legalized the music download market with Itunes music store which is today the number one LEGAL multimedia retailer, stick to Nokia and the other 1000 times better devices if you like to live in the gray shade illegal area.
Apple is a company that makes billion of dollars of legal profits and makes millions of consumers happy like the 12,6 million people that bought the Iphone in the past 15 months.

Using this App my iPhone paid for itself over 100 times, although I have lost a few in the last couple of weeks.
Bloomberg is pretty good as well full of info although you can't actually trade.
The Apple iphone has no Bluetooth 4 sending data (fotos, music files etc) only 4 headset. It is the most disastrous phone till date.I can't understand y people r running behind Apple iphone.Y can't people go 4 Nokia,Sony Ericsson, Samsung,Blackberry etc which r 1000 times better than the stupid iphone.
Why is it then that SAXO DID NOT made a trading platform for other

They are market leaders and do not want to benefit from the other phone brands users ?
Or is it because the Iphone provides unparallel performance as a smarphone compared to the others ?
I like iPhone's design, from the UI to the physical features because it appears to be so classy.
But there were things that I don't like, the lack of most basic features for a phone.
But still I like this one along with my N95 8GB.
How was the phone when your listening music using phone's speaker?
How was also the phone when used as loudspeaker during a call?
I want some feedbacks from the user.
I don't like the one from the review.
