If you go to an htc hd forum, you would also see users complaining about its battery life. I really doubt your story because it does not make sense to have an iphone 3gs and an htc hd at the same time. As you've said, if you think that the iphone consumes 10% of its battery life just on standby at night with 3g on, then why don't you turn off its 3g at night?!
If you sit in front of a pc all day and only use your iphone when it rings or when you get an sms, I don't even know why you got the iphone. Just get a basic phone if you only need it for calls and sms. And no one here is saying that the iphone is perfect.

i.e. Not using it as a smartphone.
PS you can also plug it into a USB port on the computer you're sitting at "all day" and keep the battery charged making it a non-issue.
Battery life only becomes an issue if you can't get to somewhere to charge any phone before it goes flat.
That somewhere could be a computer with a USB port and a data cable, a car charger, a device with an iPod dock, a powerpoint, even plug in portable batteries.

I do not understand what your response has to do in relation to my post. I use my phone for what I want when I want it and fully. I do not hold back, I have 43 applications, I use at least half everyday others les regularly. I use the ipod everyday during my commute. So what’s your point?

"After 9 quarters, the iPhone and iPod touch have reached an install base of 57 million users. By that same point, DoCoMo had achieved 25 million users, Netscape 11 million, and AOL just 7 million. Apple's platform has also outpaced the debuts of game consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
Though the iPhone and iPod touch represents just 17 percent of global smartphones, the two devices are responsible for 65 percent of handheld Web browsing, according to Net Applications, and half of all mobile app usage, according to AdMob. Compare that to Nokia's Symbian platform, which has 45 percent of all mobile devices, but just 7 percent of the Web share."
You may continue using your smartphone as a dumbphone if you want, to me that's a waste of money.

I did a speed test on my iphone with all three connections. Results: WIFI 10,119 Kbits/s – Edge 1,338 Kbits/s – 3G 1,587 Kbits/s. I was surprised by the minor difference between 3G and Edge. So WIFI is free and so much faster.

I have a HTC HD as an alternate unlocked phone, based on the same usage; browsing, MP3 player, calls, emails and text the HTC will last double the amount of time and consume less data for the same services. The iphone batteries will lose 10% of its charge just by sitting there all night with 3G on.
I sit in front of a PC all day I have no need for the phone during the day except if it rings of I receive a text. Therefore, it’s not tied to my hip, I can let it go! I like the phone and live with its inconveniences but some just want to make it look perfect when it’s not.

Yes, I totally agree that Smartphone’s will consume more power. In light of this fact, higher capacity batteries should be installed in these phones. Unfortunately, with the iphone you are stuck with what it comes with since you can open it up to install a higher capacity battery.
if you want to take photos . . .buy a gigital camera if you want an awesome phone with everything you need and if u cant find what you need "theres an app for that"
Working in a phone store I get to see all the different phones. The I Phone is probably the best device out there, its capabilities in terms of personalising and apps is second to none. I currently have an Lg Arena, which is ok, but playing with an I Phone means I am definitely getting one when I upgrade. They are way ahead.
