First of all, thank you a lot for reply.

    Ohhh...no...

I can recall what was the version out of the box.

Ok....I havent updated to Kitkat..thats good I think then if stable update is coming soon.

So will this stable kitkat update solve the issues which were solved by updates between 1.14 and 1.18

Do you suggest that I downgrade to 1.14 from 1.18 and then incrementally update to 1.18.40.9.

If yes, I think I need to do that manually as OTA will update me to latest version directly.

        Hi,
Anybody made their firmware to 2.20.X and seeing any difference?
(I see one person already commenting that ,no specific observations on the upgrade.)

App ops starter is really awesome app suggested by tomazz.
            It helped me a lot.

My zenfone 5 was suffering from battery drain issue before 15 days then I followed tomazz opinion of hard reset.
And then my phone worked properly for 15 days.
then I installed "App ops starter" before 5 days.
Suddenly battery drain problem started from yesterday's night.
In morning I came to about the problem.
Then I gone through my "app ops starter" and came to know that camera app was running continuously even after using "force stop" option which was eating my 6% per hour.
then I disabled all permissions of camera app from "app ops starter" and restarted the phone.
Now my phone is working fine(back to normal eating 1% per hour on standby).

"app ops starter" shows you which apps are running.
Apps running on top are continuously running apps.
Once you clicks on any app , you can see which parts of apps are running(eg. location , read contacts, keep awake ) .

            thanks a lot tomazz

AnonD-324442, 27 Oct 2014Hey Tomazz, I have always done a clean factory reset n wipe before and after a full update,... moreThe only issue that I still have is that once or twice a day, the SD card seems to be unmounted and remounted.

I don't know when or why this happens, but I noticed it because there was SD card logo in notifications, telling me that SD card has just been inserted. Obviously I didn't touch it.

However apart from seeing notification it never happened during taking photos or recording videos, which is what I use SD for. Or during watching video or listening to music.

So I'm not sure what causes that. I am not the only one with this issue and it has been reported.

Apart from that - no issues.

AnonD-322648, 27 Oct 2014Hi Tomazz, First of all thank you for your lots of suggestions and feedbacks. Those are really... moreThat's the problem. You probably did not get the phone with 1.18.40.9 to get that OTA update.

It likely came with 1.14 which means that the update you received, missed out all the other updates, which fixed camera, speaker, LED indicator, flash, Wifi, ...

I blame Asus for screwing up updating system, which should have installed every update available after your current version, not only the last one.

KitKat with battery patch should not have worse battery life than 1.18.40.10, if any, better.

I do recommend you do look into clipping the wings of some of the software that loves sucking the battery, like Facebook messenger, Blackberry messenger, Skype...

You also have an option of waiting another 3 weeks until full next KitKat firmware is planned for release.

I have always done a clean factory reset n wipe before and after a full update, the fact that I only do a full update not ota except for one that changed my recovery to be KK ready.

As per your comment, if I do the same way reset n wipe before and after, the KK OS would be stable?
No APN flaw? or any thing else that people are facing.. I'm not concerned about the battery, for the fact remains true that for a Big Screen you need much power and if your using it to its fullest capacity it will drain faster n heat up too..

I'm guessing that you must have done a Factory Reset n Wipe before and after loading the full KK OS.. So is your OS stable with everything working without any work arounds?
If your facing any issues, can you share the same. Would help me to check if any of my necessary ones would be holding back.

                          Thank You.

Relied on the release notes and never bother to test it until it was brought up.

The test showed that both can use 3G, but only one at the time - the other is forced to 2G.

That's the limitation of the modem module used.

Done it a couple of times for "educational purpose" and can't say that it's hard. I mean, Asus (unlike Apple) uses screws, not glue. Therefore you could complete it in about 30 minutes.

The cost of the digitiser + screen is between 60 and 100 $, depending on the seller.

AnonD-300572, 26 Oct 2014Hi..I'm still using jb 4.3 os... will Asus release an optimized kitkat version?? If yes, could... moreHere's the thing... if you upgrade OS, you need to change 2 parts of the OS, the OS and the recovery partition.

So at least 1.18.40.10 (or another update of JB) would be required at the minimum, to have a KK recovery partition, before installing KK.

Now the original KK to stable KK updates already exist, but the main problem in stabilising the system has been the settings being moved from JB to KK.

You can get a stable KK OS right now, but you would need to perform it in these steps:

                                        - backup your phone
                                        - wipe your phone to factory reset
                                        - upgrade to KK
                                        - wipe your phone to factory reset
                                        - install incremental updates in order to 2.20.40.9
                                        - restore your apps and settings

Some would advise to clear the cache partition as well.

Now there are a few things that need to be cleared out immediately about the updates:

                                        - software updates cannot fix the hardware flaws
                                        - battery life improves in standby, but not in operation, given the fairly large illuminated HD screen
                                        - battery will still stay the same 2110 mAh and no software update can change that
                                        - speaker still has the same amplifier which is on the quiet side, and there's only that much that software tweaking can do to make it louder

What you CAN do to improve battery life is to get a permissions manager, and shut off permissions for the tasks that apps should not have access to anyway (as these background spying tasks burn a lot of power), if you do not require to be immediately notified of emails or messages, you can set the power scheme to cut the data connection when phone is in sleep.

If you have an option, choose an operator running high frequency (1800/1900/2100 MHz) rather than 850/900 MHz bands, which burn twice the power.

Get an app that kills apps until you actually start them, so they don't automatically start when you power on the phone.

Keep the screen on automatic brightness.

Disable flip cover if you're not using the active flip case.

All that said - it still has longer battery life (and 15% higher capacity) than iPhone 6.
