Kev, 15 Nov 2008Thanks for putting up such a detailed review, that really helped! A couple of questions abou... moreThe browser is very good, however i forgot to mention that both the Storm and Iphone dont support flash which on some sites is a must. However, for just surfing the web would still go for the Iphone. It scrolls almost as well as a desktop browser, but to zoom in and out of pages is excellent.
I got mine at the Birmingham Bull Ring store on upgrade for free yesterday. I have been playing with it and it is a world apart from my Blackberry Curve i have from work.
I really like it I love the screen and best of all push email. I have always use a Nokia 88xx phone up untill the Sapphire Arte so this was a big step for me, I havw officially bought in to the hype of this phone.
Atleast I get 14 dyas to give it back if i get bored and get a carbon. It is a good handset have a play with it instore you will like it!

If that's the case i m just go and buy a touch then get a storm when the prices come down a little.

A couple of questions about the browser at this point. How quick is it compared to desktop browsing? I rarely surf with my computer anymore, and need a reliable fast browser. Buying Apple ain't an option tho. Also, does it do Flash and other plug-ins?
Cheers
Right people as a proud owner of both the Iphone 3G on O2 and the Storm on Vodafone as of Yesterday, i think im in a solid position to give you a comprehensive review.
Iphone. Right im going to be honest this phone is oustanding at the few things that they focused on. The web browser is the best bar none. The UI is very very good. Attachment Viewing is excellent. The App store is very good for freebies which makes good use of WiFi another good feature. However their are negatives to this handset which to be honest annoy the hell out of me. The battery life on this handset is very poor if you use it to talk a lot you wont get through a day i promise you. Its all well and good having Wifi but whats the point when the battery is so poor you have to keep the phone plugged in. Due to this i dont use the wifi as much as i would want i just jump on my laptop. The camera is rubbish and on the odd occasion where i have used it, to find you cant send the picture message is stupid. The most annoying thing for me is that you cant forward text messages, even your most basic handset does this. To top that you cant copy and paste to get around this. The keylock is not good, on many occasions in my pocket the handset has become unlocked and made calls. If you do email a lot, this is not for you, the touch screen keyboard is not very responsive when you want to type fast. The other thing i discovered with the touch screen recently was that i was out shopping and that day was very cold so my hands were cold. I got a call and tried answering it and the screen would not respond. I later discovered that as the screen is heat sensored that if your hands are too cold it wont work. Finally the signal is poor in my house with my old Nokia N95 i had signal anywhere but with the phone half of my house will not pick up a signal.
Overall its an average phone but an excellent web browsing device. The hype has led me and many users to believe its so good when its not. Its good to show off with, much like the Nokia Arte series but there are much better phones out.
Storm. Having been a blackberry user for many years the drawback on this device is the no Wifi but as a blackberry user i have always come to expect this. The 3G is a welcome addition which is enough to keep me happy. The handset is a tad bit slow, which i hope will sort out down the line. The clickable touchscreen is awesome. I can email and text very quickly and accurately and love the qwerty or sure type option when flipping between portrait and landscape mode. Push email is spot on as usual but the attachment viewer and EDITOR is a good move and will save me lots of time. The battery is good having used it for most of yesterday. The camera is good enough. The phone even synchs with ITunes for your music. The signal is good. The web browser is no way near as good as the Iphones. The fluid scroll through on Iphones browser is way ahead of the storm. The speaker phone is very good and much better than Iphones. To be honest it is a solid all round device. The only thing i dont like is the slowness and size of the device is quite chuncky.
Overall the Storm is a better device than the Iphone but it does depend on what you need it for. If you were more Nokia Arte than N95 8Gb then you will prefer the Iphone, but if its functionality you want theres no contest the Storm wins hand down. If like me you want to have both then do that or if you dont want to pay for two lines, get a Storm as your phone and an Ipod Touch which is the Iphone without the phone element.
in response to anonymous,
I had an omnia and sent it back as the screen was faulty! But viat again will be resolved over time... The issue was viat generally the ui was just not as friendly as the iphone or the storm. Screen was much narrower and needed a stylus. If windows mobile i'd go for the HTC touch HD but, surprise surprise not available on vodafone! Thought of the N96 but my current phone is the N95 8GB so apart from the iplayer the same phone but the 96 has less battery life!
Thanks for the advice but i've researched thoroughly and vodafone have nothing to rival the i.phone or touch HD people who live in non 3G areas. Such a shame as vodafone have been a good network to me over the last 12 years.
STORMCHASER, 14 Nov 2008Sorry but can the Iphone send a picture message????? Did the first Iphone have 3G?????? I ... moreiphone 3g took 12 months to get 3g- anyone waiting another 12 months for storm 2 or should i get a one loaded already on the market, or just wait for pixon without wifi also and 8mp?
just wanted to say also that the fact that none are available as upgrades now doesn't bother me as i would just wait a week or 2. And that the click through screen is excellent. Bottom line.... Firmware updates will solve the slow ui but it won't make wifi appear.... Such a shame.
no wi-fi
AJ, 15 Nov 2008well just had half an hour fettling with the storm in one of the vodafone stores in cardiff.
... moreTry the omnia as an iphone alternative as a thought, spec sheet to die for- i had one for 6 1/2 days before it sent me insane on vodafone. When i finally got through to 14 day returns they told me that 9/10 handsets they had back were omnia! On 2nd thougts dont bother.
They should just leave touch screen to others and get the N85 (orange only currently) or other great handsets like the innov8 (exclusive to carphone warehouse- where you cant get a new vodafone innov8 on contract with, and cant get an upgrade with either.) but they messed up here big style also- but you could get an N96 if you had few hundred hanging around in this deep dark recession were heading for.......Merry Christmas vodafone !
Benzeema, 15 Nov 2008Release 14th as informed and bucket loads. Feels good, looks good and works great..The 'tech guys' were walking around the big stores weeks ago with pre-release units telling 'foot-fodder' like me that the big launch WAS the 7th, that the phone IS awesome and it HAD wifi! What a joke, a real deal breaker i would say on all three fronts, if 'tech guys' cant get the spec right the we should just rely on gsmarena info to give us how it stands
well just had half an hour fettling with the storm in one of the vodafone stores in cardiff.
The graphics look amazing but the interface is really slow! Turn the phone from landscape to portrait and you are waiting about 3 seconds for the screen to flip.
I've just left there sure that i'll be changing to O2 and an iphone after 12 years with vodafone. Chatting to the really nice staff in the vodafone store who were trying frantically to find me a handset that fit's the bill (a touchscreen with a ui to rival apple and wifi) but vodafone just don't have anything. I could live with the slow ui as firmware updates will solve this but no wifi is a showstopper for me as i have no 3g coverage at home. I even asked them can you import me an iphone from australia (exclusive to voda over there) "no can do!"...... Oh well bye bye vodafone, your loss hello O2 and iphone!
I think what people need to do is calm down and be patient. I can understand how everyone is feeling right now, with the out of stock, no upgrades to existing customers business but complaining about it isn't going to help the situation. Obviously, Vodafone are at fault here by not doing the one crucial thing, keeping the existing customers. They try so hard to gain new customers, they forget about us! I've been waiting to upgrade to this phone since august so I for one know how it feels to be turned away due to various reasons such as out of stock which is absolutely bs. Anyway I'll be calling them again for an upgrade next week so fingers crossed.
brynn, 14 Nov 2008Answer this then????,,they have been advertising all week and before this but less intense on ... moreMaybe if you checked earlier and paid your refundable deposit like the hundreds that did and duly got a call to pick their phones up today even as early as yesterday, then you wouldn't have to moan so much. Get your facts right.
Release 14th as informed and bucket loads. Feels good, looks good and works great..
was called today by voda cust services twice...once at 1030am and again at 2.30pm offering me the storm as a new customer...i am already on voda but wanted the storm for my dad so effectively a new customer...as he still has £50 credit to run out on his t mobile pay as go i stalled the deal...anyway they seemed desparate to sell me this and said there were only 500 on the day to sell and they were down to the last 100...dont know if he was tellin truth or not....anyway god knows if that useless info will bother anyone....karamojo

Sick of this lark if they cant get stuff right then leave alone making mobile fones..Plus never mind you lot coming on here saying bits not working and things release with bugs...IF its got bugs its faulty "period" dont give out false and misleading info which for tv uk breaks ofcom rules..
Sorry but can the Iphone send a picture message?????
Did the first Iphone have 3G??????
I think the answer is NO!!!
this is the first version of the Storm...chances are it will be released with wifi in the future...also the ipohnes touch interface is poo because you only have to touch the screen to go into something...probably not the thing you wanted to go into in the first place...the storm has this sorted plus you can actually feel the screen move so you have reassurance that you have actually pressed the option you wanted......stop complaining until you have actually used it!!!!
Anonymous, 01 Jan 1970I think that vodafone were scared to give a pre-release unit to gsmarena due to the obvious firmware issues prior to launch date as they knew about all the issues themselves- hence putting back launch date several times. I also think that vodafone think that they are above 'joe consumer' and think that they can treat us like dirt. I think i will now do the only decent thing left, forget my upgrade with vodafone re storm, give 30days notice keeping my N95 and go onto £20 simplicity with o2 and wait for the new Nokias on the road map released by gsmarena this week!
peeps, 14 Nov 2008regards to o2 unlimted read your small print cos they also have the fair usage policy on the i... moreThere certainly is no download limit of 500mb on o2 for the iphone, plus has wifi in addition to 3g- (u can sit in mcdonalds and browse for free), has a market leading UI and no software issues on delivery day- thats if ur not just a new customer that is also! Vodafone have been hyping up storm for months now to be like iphone launch, what a disappointment :-(
