Apple iOS Android Tablets

Global shipments of tablets keep going down, according to a report by Digitimes Research. During the first quarter of 2018, only 33 million units were shipped. This is a 28.2% fall on a quarterly basis and 14.9% YoY. Analysts conclude that there are two main reasons for the massive drop - lack of stimulation from non-Apple manufacturers and clients adjusting inventory.

Digitimes: Tablet shipments reach new low in Q1, only 33 million units sold

Apple introduced the new iPad 9.7 (2018), but the high price is preventing it from shipping meaningful numbers.

Size-wise, tablets launched in 2018 are 9.7” and bigger, while the 7” and 8” devices are declining in sales. The smaller size is 8% down for a second consecutive quarter. Looking at processors, Samsung and Huawei boosted their in-house solutions, while shipments for chipsets by MediaTek and Qualcomm kept going downward.

Apple is expected to go up in the next quarter with a new iPad Pro device. Other manufacturers are not planning any major launches and Digitimes is forecasting a drop of 6.24% in shipments to about 31.06 million units.
