Exynos 7872 unveiled: hexa-core CPU with A73 cores, plus an iris scanner

Samsung Mobile hardware Announcement

Samsung officially unveiled the Exynos 7872 chipset, which we already saw on the Meizu M6s. The new chip is part of the mid-range Exynos 5 series, but packs some more upscale features.

It is built on a 14nm process and features a hexa-core CPU with two clusters: 2x Cortex-A73 (2.0GHz) + 4x Cortex-A53 (1.6Ghz). The graphics power is supplied by a Mali-G71 GPU.

The chipset has built-in support for an Iris scanner, something currently reserved for flagship devices. Also, the camera department boasts 1080p @ 120fps video recording capabilities as well as Smart Wide Dynamic Range.

But this mid-range chip has some limitations. There’s no 2160p capability and no special provisions for a dual camera. Also, the max screen resolution is 1,920 x 1,200, which rules out 18:9 FullHD+ screens.

Anyway, the Exynos 7872 sports an LTE Cat. 7 2CA modem (300Mbps down, 150Mbps up). It does Wi-Fi 802.11n dual-band (but no ac) as well as Bluetooth 5.0. The positioning system is quite capable with support for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo. FM radio is supported as well.

Supported memory types are LPDDR3 for RAM, eMMC 5.1 for built-in storage and the SD 3.0 standard for expandable memory (i.e. UHS-I microSD cards). Note the lack of UFS.

Recently, Samsung launched the Galaxy A8 (2018) phones with Exynos 7885 - a similar 14nm chip with a 2+6 processor. That one does support higher resolutions for tall aspect ratios, but the A8 can't record 2160p video either.

the CPU design is similar but is far from being the same Exynos 7872 is six core (2 A73 + 4 A53) while Exynos 7885 is ocata core (2 A73 + 6 A53) also the frequences of Mali G71 cores could be different!

well, the CPU cores will be much more powerful as showed the first Antutu benches, which scored around 88k. the GPU is IMHO mediocre, as seen in the Samsung A8. but on the other hand, more than 90% of the users won't notice the difference, as on...
