Google Android

It's the first Monday of the month, and hopefully by now you know that means Google's treating us to another Android security update. The company has published the factory images and full OTA zip files for the devices it supports directly.

Aside from many security fixes rated critical and high, the new update brings some functional improvements too. All devices should see better Bluetooth performance, while Pixels will also benefit from improved Wi-Fi connectivity with certain APs, and changes to the IMEI SV format display.

The Pixel 2 and 2 XL have improvements in switching between antennas in areas of weak signal coverage, and the Pixel 2 XL should also receive a fix for the proximity sensor and a more consistent Always On Display experience.

The new build number for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL will be OPM2.171026.006.C1 or OPM4.171019.021.E1 (the latter for T-Mobile). If you have a Pixel, Pixel XL, or Pixel C, it will be OPM4.171019.021.D1, while the Nexus 5X and 6P get OPM6.171019.030.B1.

The over-the-air rollout doesn't seem to have started, but that will undoubtedly happen in the next few days (or hours even). If you're impatient and know how to flash a system image or full OTA zip file, head to the first two Sources below and have at it.

I've never used the fingerprint sensor for unlocking. I do use it for swiping down notifications and that works fine.
