Anonymous, 23 Aug 2020Cameras are hardware!! i dont know why ppl think they get pixel experience using ported Gcam?.... moreActually you got it all wrong. People don't install ported GCam's on their non-Pixel phones because they want a Pixel experience! That's the dumbest idea ever! They don't want a "poor man's" Pixel phone either if that's what you think. No, absolutely not.
Pixel phones have very good camera software (GCam) but have VERY LIMITED camera hardware - no ultrawide camera, no telephoto camera etc,., rending the GCam software, super-underutilized! Then there's also the issue of the official GCam's lack of access to advanced tweaks and settings, but which the GCam mods and ported GCam versions allow!
There's more to a phone than the camera software alone! Camera hardware (ultrawide, telephoto options) are also important which NO, I REPEAT, NO Pixel phone in existence currently offers!
And frankly, the crippled Pixel phone experience is not exactly desirable for most people. Only the GCam and software update support is good on Pixel phones.
Everything else is HORRIBLE! 128GB internal storage only with NO micro sd expansion? Really Google? 4K 60fps videos and other music and media files will fill it up quickly even before the phone gets outmodeled.
Then there's no headphone jack for top end Pixel models, a really stupidly low battery capacity, limited big screen options and with huge notches or punch holes, no dual SIM support (only eSIM which is non-existent in many countries), no smart share (wireless screen sharing of offline Netflix downloads), etc. That's the crippled Pixel experience!
That's the reason why very few buy Pixel phones and Google never learns or is so stubborn to correct that because of vested interests in cloud storage, bluetooth Pixel buds, and low battery capacity for rapid battery deterioration and hence rapid turnover/obsolescence of Pixel phones.
If phone use and experience would only be about camera and software updates, the Pixel phones would sell more than Samsung's super expensive flagship phones, but no, it won't - EVER because other than the GCam software and fast updates, everything about the overhyped Pixel experience is just that. Users find ways to get the best of both worlds. Since it is IMPOSSIBLE to get Pixels to have bigger batteries, micro sd storage and true dual SIM, people buy instead other phones and sideload the only thing that's appealing on the Pixel phones - GCam. And as a bonus, they get to use GCam with the second camera (ultrawide), tweak its settings to their heart's desire, while not losing micro sd expansion, bigger screen, bigger battery options, etc. And with Samsung phones now offering 3 year software updates to its flagship and upper midrange phones (A-series), there's absolutely ZERO LOGIC why anyone would buy a Pixel phone other than maybe because of the 'Google' brand name, which isn't exactly as appealing as 'Apple' or 'Samsung'.

Just because a port you downloaded doesn't work for your phone doesn't mean ALL of them don't! As I mentioned, there are lots of many other ports! As many as the developers that port them for your phone especially if you have a popular snapdragon phone from Samsung or Xiaomi (like the Poco) and they work even for the secondary ULTRAWIDE camera which NO PIXEL phone has at the moment! Get it?
And YES, even PIXEL phones can have GCam mods/ GCam ports themselves which means Pixel users can have both the ORIGINAL GCam and the Moded/Ported GCam side by side on their PIXEL phones. Why bother with a port, when you have the original one? Because many people want control! They want the final output to be exactly how they like it, and not exactly how Google likes it. Is that so hard to digest? Why do people accessorize and jazz up their cars and replace perfectly functional tires and tire rims, lights, audio system and even their car's paint color when there is nothing wrong with their car? Individuality, control and customization! If you chose android over iOS, you should know that!

The GCam ports allow tinkering which means you can have photo output on all default settings, or BETTER yet, if you just spend some time studying and learning how those settings affect the final photo output, you can actually make the color response and photo processing truly your own style, attuned to exactly how you like it. It's like jazzing up one's car. You may end up with a jazzed up car that will look better than anyone else's or it may look worse to everyone else other than you.

I agree the ports can produce great results with a little effort however the Pixel phone will produce great results with no effort. On my 3a the pictures processed pretty slow, but the 4a seems quite snappy. The main thing I see with the GCam ports is that most of them require a bit of tinkering to get them to be serviceable.

GCam ports are actually better for users who know photography and want to tweak settings (that Google FORBIDS in the original GCam for Pixel phones) for them to get the FINAL photo output the user wants, not the FINAL photo output Google wants. And there are many ported versions compatible for a single phone each with customizable features and tweaked in many different ways as many as the developers that port them. I know you'll never be able to appreciate that as most Pixel owners are as naive as iphone users. They don't bother with customization settings.
