See, we have pixels on a camera sensor to detect light photons and convert them into RGB values. These are actually photo diodes which detect the wavelength and hence are able to determine the color and convert them into digital values.
Now, bigger the size of our pixel, more the area and hence it can capture more information quickly as more photons fall on it per second. This also should increase dynamic range.
So what HTC advertises as ultrapixel are just normal pixels but they are slightly bigger than conventional pixels. Hence they capture more light and should lead to better low light photos.
This also has downsides. One is the less resolution. If we have bigger pixels, then we'll have less pixels on the same sensor area and hence we get less megapixels( 4 in this case). Less pixels decrease the resolution and hence the detail in the pics. It also render ultrapixel camera unable to capture 4k videos or do super sampling.
Now this is a ideal world scenario. In reality, HTC doesn't give much attention to their cameras and puts really cheap lens and other hardware. Also the software processing is very bad.
This leads to the ultrapixel camera performing much worse than it can perform and plagued with issues such as very low dynamic range( which should be actually higher), bad exposure metering with exposure almost never getting right, purple fringing, edge softness and some other issues.
Also HTC actually didn't put the oleophobic coating on their main lens and didn't put a scratch proof glass there. Hence we are hearing a lot of lens scratching problems here. However, the depth sensor has a good quality glass and that's an irony.

There is a File Manager on new 4.3.3 update. I have never discovered any other problem that you have mentioned. You can install any app from third party sources, that's the main benefit of Android. However, I don't install any app from third party sources.

Have been using the M8 for about two weeks. The phone fantastic quality and performs exceptional. It is by far the best performing phone I have ever used.
There are a few frustrations.
- Cannot write directly to SD (more a kit Kat issue)
- 3rd party app restrictions seem to be greater on this phone than any other I have used. Keep running to the "need to root" for 3rd party app control
- LED control...ie must be rooted to use it more than default
- email widget - clears counters if you open the email
These, and a few others, are all trivial and minor things, however they seem to be all functionality that I've had on older phones, HTC seems to be going towards a more "Apple like" restrictive environment.

In simply the µm² indicated the actual size of each pixel. Pixel size refers to how big, in microns, each pixel on the sensor is. Typically, bigger pixels result in higher quality images, especially at higher ISO settings.
2 µm² is a HTC's gimmick, we actually don't know whether HTC cameras really have 2 µm². All they say Ultra Pixel sensor capture 300% more light and pixel are larger than conventional phone camera sensors, but who knows actually it really does the job right. Even the Lumia 1020 has 1.5 or 1.6 µm². What is the big deal of including a 1/2" sensor to a phone? The Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 have 1/2.6" and 1/2.3" sensors respectively. However, the HTC M8 has a 1/3" sensor. That's not sufficient to produce better pictures compared to S5 and Z2 sensors. The MP amount or µm² doesn't define the sensor size, it's up to the camera or phone manufacturer. They will decide what size of sensor we should include to our phones. For an example Nokia decided to include a 1/1.5" sensor to the Lumua 1020 with insane 41 MP, it produces outstanding picture quality compared to Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2. They could have even made a 1/2" sensor with 41 MP, but it will not give better results as larger a 1/1.5" sensor.
I don't know technically how Optical Image Stability (OIS) assists for better low-light performance, but I have never heard it. Any image stabilizer doesn't give better low-light performance. OIS to reduce the blur and noise of the pictures due to the shakiness of the camera. The only thing we have to do, just improve the ISO sensitivity of the camera sensor for better low-light performance. Anyway, OIS is a very important feature for a camera. Just look at the Sony Exmor and Lumia Pureview sensors, they produce better low-light pictures. Did they design a gimmicky sensor like HTC for better low-light performance? "No"
My recommendation is HTC should use normal 1/2" 13 MP (minimum) sensor with better ISO performance as many other OEMs do. If HTC continues their "Ultra Pixel" technology, it would be an epic fail.
I don't even know much about µm² and HTC's "Ultra Pixel" technology. HTC is just fooling people by showing useless statistics. The µm² values don't make any real-world sense. They are matter only if you buy a DSLR camera.

S5 does average pictures imo and it has 16 MP. Who needs photos with 5312 x 2988 resolution?? HTC One M8 main failure is its camera. What makes it almost unusable is software. It can't focus properly and has huge problems with overexposure. And manual mode does not work properly.

If HTC keeps their pixel size ( 2 micron) constant and make the camera even 9 megapixel, the camera sensor will have to be about 1/2 inches. And that's certainly not going to happen as that's ridiculously large sensor.
They can go back to the traditional camera though. But that'll decrease low light photo quality. And to improve that, they'll have to bring in OIS which doesn't allow the duo camera.
There is a lot of trouble for HTC and they'll either continue to make this kind of useless cameras or they'll have to accept that they made some seriously bad camera in past.

I have no any issue with the new Android update plus now there is a file manager on the new update. So no need to worry anymore about the SD card writing issue.

Lol no ways im going for a samsung phone...i just love htc...gonna wait for m9 then...but i think htc wil release a phone earlier than march lookin at every1 releasing a flagship every 6 months...hoping for m9 to hav a kickass camera with 8 ultrapixel yeah :)
