thanos, 05 Nov 2008the battery is realy an issue (a big one). Well it might not be a commercial lie though... rat... moreOf course that they don't mention the circumstances under which the test for the battery performance in stand-by was done, but in the worst case it shouldn't by that far from the advertised number. I can tell you how I did the test, and I'm sure that this is the correct way to test this at the customer side.
So, I first conducted several full battery cycles (complete charge then discharge). I also let it charging during a couple of nights. Then, w/o touching anything in the phone SW I simple let it stand-by mode. By default the phone connects to a 3G network with HSDPA enabled. If 3G is not available it connects to a 2G network. Now, about the signal strength, I'm sure that it was OK all the time because there is a 3G antenna next to the building that I live in. The room temperature was about 20deg C, which is quite good for the battery performance. If there is nothing mentioned about the circumstances under which the battery test was done, by me this means the conditions that have used.
OK, but instead of 396 hours it lasted about 72 hours. Then I thought that the battery is not OK and I tested it with other load, not the phone. The battery capacity is 900mAh, which means that at 20deg Celsius the battery should survive 20 hours at 45mA constant load current. So, I made the test and it turns out that the battery is almost OK as it survived a bit more than 19 hours. Please DO NOT try this test by yourself, except if you have the necessary knowledge and electronic equipment which are needed for it.
So what is the conclusion? The HTC phone is drawing too much current in stand-by mode!
Does anyone care to comment my biggest complain about that the phone is making calls by itself. Is there a fix for this issue available yet? I wrote to the HTC support center, but no answer almost a week already :(
Conclusion: is you intend to use this "phone" mainly and intensively as a phone, you should not by it. However if you care about all the stuff that is integrated in the small sized phone, then you might consider buying it.
Here are the disadvantages that are crucial for me:
* battery performance is far behind from the expected one
* the camera is w/o power LED, this means no pictures in the dark. Besides this 3.2Mp are not good enough for the demanding users.
* there is no pouch in the standard package, which is a must as it protects the nice phone;

Well it might not be a commercial lie though... rather a marketing trick. It isn't mentioned anywhere under which circumstances the test (for the battery life) are made. Because if it was, it should be many lines long!!! LOL ;). And as I say, it's better to tell the flaws first because these info we provide is mostly for people who think of buying it. And I think it's fair! The company says all the good things so we should say all the negative!! But I don't think that suggesting loudly not to buy this phone. It's not appropriate at all! It seems like you work for some other (competitive) company! Everyone can judge if they want to buy it or not.

I'm using it for about two weeks and I'm not happy so far. I knew that there is a trade-off between the battery capacity and size(weight), but I didn't knew that it would last 5 times less then the announced stand-by time. According to the HTC web site the "diamond" should last 396 hours in stand-by, if it's used in 3G network (WCDMA). However mine one last a bit more than 3 days. This is a BIG disappointment, what a big commercial lie!
However the most annoying issue that I've seen so far is that the phone is making calls by itself :) I was amazed when I found out that the phone called the one contact that I've added in my contact list. That happened when the phone was in stand-by mode and the touch screen was locked. I don't know who should I blame for this, Microsoft or HTC, probably both.
The camera is not good as I expected, and it doesn't have a power LED, which could also be used as a nice flash light.
Besides the above mentioned flaws, the VGS touch screen, wi-fi, GPS and G-sensor modules are great.

I own the phone and everything was great until I upgraded the software to the latest that HTC affers on his site. After the instalation and the initial setups, the animation between "home", "people", "messages" etc... is gone! Only the up n down touches within a section works they way it used to. On the other hand, I think that the power consumption is a bit better, which was the worst part of the phone, but still it doesn't sutisfy! In addition after the upgrade, I couldnt manage to restore all the settings that I had before (allthough it was a full backup) Finally I can't find even the half of the applications that exist on other operating systems (such as symbian, apple, etc...). But I love the screen quality as well as the resolution! (I think HD will be even better).

                      In short: Toy NOT tool.

The hardware is nice, apart from the ugly and very impractical back side that doesn't allow it to be operated on a table!! A mouse pad or similar soft material is needed(!?!?!).
WM6 stinks like the old Win3.0!!! VERY unstable. Have had the phone for about a month and needs a hard reset installing and setting everything from scratch about once a week (takes about 40 minutes). If you're not a 'nerd' and plan using your phone for a stable platform for work then look elsewhere!!
BUT if you can live with interrupted calls, inability to always answer calls, sms not always sent to all recipients, sudden lockups, missing notifications, chopped music playback, and other typical Microsucks behavior. Then this IS a nice gizmo.
BUT as I said initially see this as a nice toy with a lot of features that are fun to play with, don't expect a stable work tool. And consider having your old phone in your bag...
With a little luck and with their usual speed Microsucks will be able to create a stable os for mobiles within a few decades...
Meanwhile lets hope their competitors can do better...
