Huawei Mate 8 Nougat update leaks ahead of release

Huawei Android Firmware updates Rumors

The Huawei Mate 9 was announced a couple of weeks ago and launches straight on Android 7.0 Nougat. With that in mind, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a Nougat update is coming to last year's model - the Mate 8.

Already available to download from Huawei servers, the update has not yet been rolled out officially. It's a rather safe assumption that this won't happen before the Mate 9 makes it to retail stores - after all, it makes sense for the current flagship to be on the cutting edge in terms of software, at least for a short while. Anyway, Mate 8 users on XDA have installed the new firmware and have also posted detailed installation instructions, complete with links to the files needed.

Looking at the screenshots, the Nougat update brings with it an EMUI update as well - to the same version 5.0 as the one on the Mate 9 we just reviewed. That means the contextual shortcuts in the bottom of the display, homescreen with an app drawer as an option, and improved multi-window support. The camera app interface isn't quite the same, for one, and the Pro mode is a separate shooting mode, instead of being just a swipe away in Auto.

You can check out a the brief video below to get a glimpse of what Nougat on the Mate 8 will look like.

Huawei has spoiled me. My Mate2 was STABLE. My Mate8 on MM is STABLE. It's beta, I'm not moving...seen too many people having issues so far. I'll wait til the OFFICIAL release, then give it a week or two to see if it's stable.
